Post An idea
Now I don't expect this to ever come into fruition because some members of the forum are busy or whatever. But what if we had a recording event, sort of like the drumjams we were doing a while ago, where we record short songs that we spontaneously write... and here's the catch. You can only use one model of microphone to record all the sources, however many that may be. Maybe we could set further rules like, no plugins that really colour the sounds, just clean compression where it's needed. We'd each have whatever mic we own and went with, we'd each have our own musical style and mixing style.

I think that'd be cool to really hear what a mic sounds like.

I could record a simple drum jam with my pair of 2001s? :idk: I'm leaving for a week or so of work tomorrow morning, but after that I'm game to participate.

Okay, so after you do that you could add bass, guitar, vocals, snaxophone, your farts, etc with the same mic and post it.

And I'd do the same to a drumtrack of my own with maybe, AT2020s or SM57s since I have more than one of those, and I'd post my result.

Like it's not a drumjam really, we wouldn't be collaborating with each other as much as spontaneously making and sharing musics that follow a certain guideline.

Huh. This is an inneresting idea. I'm not at all a good drummer  but I could contribute a mic or three that no one else here has. :nods: NT5 matched pair, NTK tube LDC, RSM-4 ribbon (internal windscreen removed)...

If one couldn't play drums they could just use their mic to make samples of them tapping on stuff and slap some abstract thingie together. Limitations are good!

Oh, I can play them, just not well.

...but if I only have one or two of something, I could use it to sample individual kit pieces, which might be useful given the experiment...

It never stopped me or Lars Ulrich, so keep on truckin', brother.

How involved/tedious would sampling a kit be? Do you do just one or multiple hits per drum? It is something I think I should do to the two drum sets I have available just ya know, because.

...and both you and Mr. Ulrich have had some quality recorded drum sounds, so there's that. It doesn't stop me from playing them when I get the chance, and I rather enjoy it. It's the kick, really, that kills me. My hands are decent enough; I know how to work a snare drum and my dynamics aren't bad. Add the kick in and don't expect me to do anything interesting at all.

As for sampling a kit, it can be as tedious or as simple as you want it to be. Really, the ideal way to do it is to get a bunch of hits on everything with all of the mics set up so you get overheads + room in there too. When I've done it in the past I've just had the drummer give everything a few solid whacks at the beginning of a session in case I need a clean hit to fix something later on.

For this experiment, the overhead and room samples wouldn't really correspond to the close hits, but it should in theory sound decent enough I could make a few patches in Kontakt that wouldn't be embarrassing.

Actually sampling a kit is easy enough if you have some mics and some drums. Making a playable sampler patch out of it that actually sounds like drums and not just one-shot drum machine hits is a lot harder. When I've done it in the past I never tried making a real instrument out of it, I'd just load, say, the snares into a sampler and use them to buff up or fix things, or have them hanging out on muted tracks to copy/paste over shitty hits.

Even still, your percussion/samples could be you hitting a log with a rock or something. As long as it was recorded with mic X and wasn't processed in a manner that hides the mic's voicing.

Drums sound fine to me, did you EQ them?

That is a good-ass cover. :huzzah:

Nothing has any EQ on it at all. Just a fuckload of compression on the vocals. And I know, I was wondering if it's just me. I have really felt like I didn't like what was going on with hi-hats through this mic, but it really sounds ace here with just a overhead and kick mic. If you had heard a stripped down just drums cut, you'd be like "FUCK, DAT SNARE". Super loud in the mix for whatever reason and cracky as all fuck in the bast possible way. BUT MOST OF ALL: I really like the way it handles bass here.

These guitar parts are pretty much all improvised or were written about an hour and half ago.

I am happy with it, and thank ya. :idk: EDIT: Heh, I dunno why I used an ":idk:" there, it almost looks snarky and confrontational. Though, I much prefer the ol' OCTO :dukes: FISTS

And as an aside: I ditched the drums from yesterday and went with laying down a bass track to a metronome first, so I actually recorded this all today.

So it's supposed to be a cover of the same song but in our own way of doing everything? Rules: One mic model, only clean compression, nothing else. Right?

I'm in!

Wait, no, well, I guess you could do the same song. But really you record whatever the hell you want, as long as you use only one kind of mic and no EQ or colouration. Like I'm going to write some sort of rock song, probably.

Listening to yours (Cam's) now with nice headpwns instead of on my laptop speakrars. It sounds really good, man. Doesn't sound like layers of too much of the same thing like I kind of hoped people's jams would sound like, the mic I guess holds up to this sort of 'use on everything' role well. Nice low end to it to boot.

You are so lucky with that damn living room reverb. Like my biggest regret with this project is that I can't add reverb really because that's 'colouration'. But you have yours naturally sourced and going into the mic.

I think I know what I plan to record. It will feature layers and layers of guitar through my Laney from my flying V. Also an acoustic, bass, drums. I can either go with AT2020, SM57 (I have a pair of each of those, three for the 57 if 58 also counts) or Avantone ATOM tom mics (which I'm sure will sound really bad, though maybe interesting too... I have three of these).

So full speed ahead. Going with the SM57. SM57 on everything. Fuck yeah.

It's a cover song. I was playing the drum track but my playing sounded really clunky for this steady plodding style of drumming, so I opted to make samples of the kit (with the 57s) and sequence the drum track. Now I does acoustic.

Sm57 with the impedence compensated... on everything! As outlined before, no EQ or colouration of any sort is added, only some compression on the drums, acoustic and bass.

Just played whiny lead guitar melodies in the place of all the singing and orchestral parts. Varied mic distance a lot to try and differentiate the sounds.

Drums are samples I made with my SM57 stitched together into a drum track with Algorhythm (old buggy drum machine program).

Guitar is exclusively my Dean V79 with PRS Dragon IIs, into my Laney. Boost with SD1 for rhythm guitars, Maxon OD9 for lead.

I think it's pretty stale to listen to. It is crying out for reverb and EQ, so I guess I'll do that and post it somewhere else.
