Post Audio Technica AT2050 demo
Just obtained this microphone.

WARNING: Sloppy morning no fucks given drumming ahead. I seriously gave zero fucks.

First clip is omni mode in front of the kit. I really dig this sound.
Second is cardioid, same position. A familiar sound.
From there there are three takes of stereo mode, getting closer to the kit each time. I am unsure if the phase is working out in stereo. Isn't it suppose to like, sound good? Or does it really need a mid mic to make it sound 'okay'? The stereo mic takes sound great if I don't flip the polarity.

I feel like there is a 'crushing feeling' coming in on the left. Maybe because the drum kit has a wall to its left and empty space to its right. Or maybe the mic isn't so good at this. I dunno.

Note: Interesting how since Soundcloud gives a mono image of the waveform, the stereo bits appear silent. :dastardly:

Okay, this time I tried a proper M-S setup a few feet in front of the kit.

AT2020 center cardioid mono, AT2050 stereo mic. Drumming is again stupid, but I think sonically this sounds really good. :eekass:

I don't know why but the stereo aspect of this seems to make more sense when a mono source is in the centre. It's like it all 'clicks' suddenly, like "yes I am a floor tom and I am over here. I am a hi hat and I'm on the other side." It didn't really sound much like that without the center mic. I don't understand why. Science?

Sounds nicey indeed. Seems a bit heavy on the highend/cymbal, but still nice, and that is prolly more like a room/placement thing anyhoo. :isay:

Yeah I hear you on it being a bit bright. I tried taking out a few db at 5khz, that really smoothed it out.

I think I could totally use this method instead of overheads. It's sounding nice and natural but stereo here. With the amount of non-cymbal content I could get a really 'glued' sound mixing in close mics.

And it really trips me out how contradictory it is that the stereo spread happens after you add in a mono centre component.
