If anyone needs themselves a classic kick mic that can serve on bass cab or floor tom, they're on sale at the place with the ginormous catalog:
http://www.sweetwater.com/store/detail/D112

This is probably less than the going used rate by a bit, so I figured I'd pass it along in case anyone's micing up some drums in the near future.

Ohhhhh. Shit. Hmm.

I might need to buy one. Post- tax season though, i might need to print up my own money to do it.

Hmm.

AKG is discontinuing the D112? :hypno:

Well, I'll be goddamned.

WTF are they going to replace it with? And is it that unfashionable now they're dropping it?

How long 'til "the old ones are way better"? :red:

Ohh. So they changed it to make it swivel.

Yeah, I predict a rise in value for the old ones. Perhaps one should bogart them while they're cheap, if they want to cash in down the road?

Though I'm sure there is literally no difference other than the adjustability.

Response curve looks exactly the same. Listed frequency response is also exactly the same. Now, the new one is listed as having a 210Ω impedance vs. 200Ω for the old-school D112. The new one is also 20g heavier, though that's probably the mount.

I've heard people claim there are sonic differences in SM7 variants (with older ones naturally being better) when the only change between two of the models as far as anyone knows was to the shockmount (because toan is in the shockmount...) so there's that. Now, the SM7 had the windscreen foam changed at one point as well, which might actually affect things... Unless you swapped the foam or just took it off. Which is a thing people do. So yeah, I can completely see people claiming the old ones are vastly superior.

Unless you really care about an integrated swivel mount, I 'spect these are fine. I am not up on production trends this very moment, but if there's any movement back toward drums that sound like drums, I suspect D112s will be back in fashion and things like the Audix D6 may not date so well.

The old standby D112/57/421 setup for micing shells is hardly innovative- there's nothing hip, new, cool or trendy about that at all- but it does generally work with a minimum of fuss.

is a d112 unfashionable? if so, i have no hope for millenials, and eagerly await the meteor, 'cause we're done here. rock music is now over.

but seriously... didn't think AKG would get wrapped up in the fashion game.. sheesh. d112s just sound like rock kick drum... but man are they a fun secondary mic on stupidly oversized guitar sounds too..

nobody's taking mine, that's for sure.
