The WeedyWet 4-5 Mic Drum Technique.

Mixerman pal, Cyndi Lauper bassist, and curmudgeonly engineer William Wittman illustrates another method for getting a badass drum sound with a handful of mics. With clips and photos.

Of note: placement of toms in the stereo field, low end strength of said toms, and the ability to widen or narrow the image as necessary. Suitable for all genres. Contact emergency services if taken internally. :snax:

While these are not exactly the drum tones I am looking for on my next session, I am very curious to try something like this.. Or atleast, something inspired by the overhead/tom mic concept. It is not dissimilar to a more rack tom oriented GJ setup, really.

I have been thinking I do not particularly like the sound of toms I have got in the past. Methinks I am gonna try this more distant tom mic/verybleedybleedy approach.

This seems to get a little more weighty tom sound than GJ, at least judging from the clip. Re: the actual drum sounds, I get that a lot of that is probably from the mic choice and sound of the kit itself. I'm sure if you wanted, say, a brighter snare, or more top end on the kick drum- something more "modern", or just plain brighter- it would be easy enough to get there. SDC on its own on the snare is an interesting choice, but it works.

I tend to like the sound of GJ in general, but in a mix with distorted guitars, the low end of the toms kinda dissapears. This seems like it might counteract that. I like what's going on with the snare here as well- plenty of snare, no bottom mic necessary.
