Re: I'm considering buying one of these, just 'cause. If i had monies, i would buy a bunch of preamps. What i really want at the moment though(in addition to some decent mics  ) is one of those UA Solo/610s. It is a bunch more money than that one though. I know that some folks like those Pre-73s, what are you hoping to get out of it?

Re: I'm considering buying one of these, just 'cause. Color and girth. I have clean (Saffire Pro) and "vintagey" midrange nice harmonics. (ART DMPA, which is surprisingly nice.) 'S another flavor fer cheep, and they're supposed to be decent. (Yes, I've read the 1073-type breakdown in TapeOp where they included this and the Chameleon Labs pre along with the high end stuff.)
The Solo 610 is a bunch more dollars, yes. I've liked the full-size 610 rack units when I've used them in the past. They are fat sounding. I'm still kinda quasi considering one myself, but I have a Tele to build.

Re: I'm considering buying one of these, just 'cause. A lot of the UA stuff looks wonderful to me. I would really like one of the 6176 jobbers they do, but holy shit they are fucking expensive.  The worst bit for me, is that DIYing the fuckers, while working out to be considerably less cash, is still not cheap. All those fancyschmancy audio transformers and whatnot. Grrr.  I would love some nice-ass outboard 'character' gear.  I need more and better mics more urgently at the moment though.

Re: mics- I think you'd be on the right track with the stuff we were mentioning in the drum thread.
