Re: Recording mics
I wonder what DM guitars would sound like through a ribbon.. Mixed with a 57.. I am intrigued.

Re: Recording mics
Ginormous on bass. Absolutely. And coupled with a brighter mic- the OM2 being a much brighter mic!- you could get some nice results blending to taste.

Re: Recording mics
I'm fairly certain I have clips of this kicking around, but fucked if I know where.

Re: Recording mics
It's dumbass simple. Open up the grille, remove the internal windscreen, reassemble. Adds some clarity. newholland from HC/Olde Maps did this to his RSM-5 as well.

Re: Recording mics
Pretty much. And I think I could handle that mod I really want to try one of these: http://www.sweetwater.com/store/detail/WorkPro12/Chances are I will end up with something else, but that amp intrigues me for some reason.

Re: Recording mics
Cheapie ribbons are nice to have around. You can get a lot of mileage out of them, much more than their price implies. Tamper with them a bit and you've got a really good mic. They're not for every source, or at least not solo-ed on every source (IMO you can get away with that with even a half-decent LDC; I've yet to find an application where I'd say "no, this is the wrong mic" unless it's introducing bleed issues on part of a drum kit) -they're way dark and smooth. It's a very full sound, though.

Re: Recording mics
And you can clobber someone with it, too!
Also, the on axis/off axis setup with two 57s can be pretty cool.

Re: Recording mics
I used that technique with my E609 and 57. E609 dead center and 57 off axis. Only tried it on the now a third dead Randall cab, though. I like the single 57 on the Genz Benz of Doom.

Re: Recording mics
For a good long while I'd settled on a Shure Beta 58A off-axis and a Shure KSM27 on-axis when I had my Mesa. It did a damn fine job of capturing that amp.
