I use only an SM57 these days. I have an E609 but I only use it when I'm specifically looking for dark fatty tones.

I sold my e609 a year ago... I wanted to try something different. The i5 has fallen out of favour for guitar recording.

What I need is an MD421.

I have always been curious to hear what a nice kick drum mic would sound like on some slamz.

I'll trade you my i5 for your Blue Ball.

The blue ball is actually a dynamic mic, but oddly, it uses phantom power. I liked that one actually. Kind of an in-between of a condenser and a dynamic, or like a condenser with a bit more bass roll-off.

For my own mics, i just use a whole pile of cheap, moastly crap, ones. MXL2001, Shure PG58s, CAD TSM411, CAD KBM412, and a bunch of really shit Nady SP-4 and Radioshack type things.

Let me get it back and play around with it.

That may be possible if I can't find a use for it.

Heya Devin, a thought that occurred to me earlier, what are you using for microphone cables?

Shure KSM27 LDC and modded Nady RSM-4 ribbon, mostly. A Shure Beta 58A if I'm in a rush. I've been using Rode NT5s as room mics as well. I have some 57s but I don't use them much these days.

How do you like that RSM-4? Have you used a stock one?

No, but you may wish to check them and make sure that they are proper XLR 3-conductor cables. If they are for instance, just two conductor cables with XLR ends on 'em(which the cheap ones sometimes are), you will run into lots of worries, funky noise, and/or malfunctioning/nonfunctioning phantom power.

I use the big ghetto musicians friend ones, and they work fine. But i also have some supercheapy random no name chinese ones here that have two conductor cables. Worth checking. :dastardly:

Depends on the mic. Large diaphragm dynamics- which are useful for a lot more than kick- vary wildly in sound. I've used a Sennheiser e602 on guitars before as an experiment and was not impressed. Most modern kick mics are pretty mid-scooped sounding. I'd guess, say, an Audix D6 would sound pretty awful, honestly.

A more traditional large-diaphragm dynamic and not a purpose-designed kick mic like a Sennheiser 421 or 441 (even though I am not a fan on guitars) or Shure SM7 should do the trick quite nicely if you like how they sound. And people stuff 'em in kick drums and have for years. They have a proven track record on guitars. The recent Heil offerings are supposed to be quite nice as well.

A more traditional/less modern but still kick-oriented mic that might be cool would be the AKG D112. I like it on a bass cab quite a lot.

The SM7 is very "in" right now. It's totally the flavor of the month for metal vox.

I've not used a stock one, no. I love the thing though, on guitar and bass both. MASSIVE GIRTH. I find it a bit too dark on vocals. The jury's still out on drums, but I've used it a bit as a room mic and like it for that. I should get a second.

I like the vocal sound they produce (a lot), very clear and concise.
It's sort of a mic I want that I will be able to use forever and potential on multiple sources.
:nods:

I would like to hear one on the bottom of a snare.

OOOH I was thinking of picking one up to mic the bass cab I will eventually own.

I will probably pick up a little 1x12" combo to lay down bass stuff. I figure the OM2 and that would pair up nicely for it :dastardly:

Bottom of a snare? Hmm... interesting; I don't think I've ever seen one used for that.

But yes, that's a mic that will last you forever and you can stick it on a bunch of things. It has a proven track record and is a worthy investment. Hard to find used at the moment, because everyone wants one and no one is selling.
