I've taken to mic-checking with Somewhere Over The Rainbow. It amuses me.

Back when I metalled, my bassist and I would run through Slaughter Of The Soul at soundcheck, but this was before the whole -core thing when you really had to know your metal to know At The Gates.

These days my guitar check isn't anything special. I should play something specific for laughs or to reference cool rockingness.

And for guitar, it usually involves a descending E minor pentatonic scale ending with a showy pinch harmonic on the low E string, 5th fret.


For anything else, smack it... if it makes noise, it's functioning.

Well I don't really gig much any more but when I fill in.. One big A chord, left to ring out so that it merges into delicious feedback. For that moment I feel like a rock god. Then we start playing shitty covers

it changes depending on my mood. Vocal checks recently have been, Wicked Game (whilst strumming the acoustic, I check my vox and acoustic at the same time) last week it was an odd cover of when Doves Cry. On guitar I usually pick something my drummer likes, which would be an alternative 90's tune. This week was Possum Kingdom.

I actually learned how to play (most of) Possum Kingdom by ear not too long ago.

I was jamming along with it, such a great song.

Bandwise, we have a bit of a jam thing we wrote specifically for soundcheck purposes.

Yus Enveno did that too... we had a minute long song fragment that was never completed, so we'd just run through it together to make sure everything sounds good.
