One of the best possible maps. I know the Shiva (not in the biblical sense ) well and a-doors it. Muchly. It is on my short list.

I am bored at work and will pick your brain: what's yer take on the Shiva? I assume from your reaction you're at least not hateful to the thing.

Re: AAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAARGH
It is a nice modded JCM800 sort of thing. I would be even more into it, if it, like all bogner shizz, was Way Less Fucking Expensive, but it is a totally functional thingamabob for them who can and care to afford such. Lately i have been revisiting the concept of the JCM actually. I think i could probably get along just fine with a 50watter. I have in the past, even gotten along with the 100w, even with the JCM900. I probably would be able to find one used cheaper than it would cost to build one too. But anyhow, tangent aside, the Shiva is a nicely modded, Marshall style map. Too much money for chris, and (as a result) i would go a lot of different places for that sort of sound before i went to Bogner, but for folks with the money for it, it is a pretty slick map. I consider it kind of like the Marshall equivalent to what Matchless/Badcat is for Vox.

You never struck me as a Marshall-flavored guy, thus the question. That and you always have something interesting and knowledgeable to say, so I figured I'd ask. Thank you for obliging me with a response. The Shiva basically fixes everything I don't like about Marshalls- grainy top end, really dry response, less-than-stellar cleans. The 900s and 2000s aren't as absurdly loud as 800s and prior, at least not in my experience. Not that I've had occasion to look in forever, but I think a 50w 900 could still be found on the cheap. (Of course, that would actually cost money. Best to steal one.) Marshalls all pretty well suffer from wanting to be turned way up; I don't think I've heard one yet I'd call a great low volume amp, though admittedly I haven't spent too much time with a JVM, and that was at "band" levels. And I think that actually works in the favor for the 900/2000 series, as someone who's gigged with older and newer Marshalls.

Re: AAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAARGH
Oh yeah, the 100w JCM 900 i had here was practically quieter than my current 20w map. I mean, not really, but, man it really was not that loud. An 800 at least *feels* much louder, whether or not it actually is, dB meter-wise. I think it must be between the cleaner circuit in the 800 and maybe shittier transformers in the 900.
As for the classic 800 crackle top end, i kind of love it. Can't explain it, but i do enjoy it. Also, like the 5150's fizz, it kind of disappears once the rest of the band is going.
Actually, if i could afford to build something, i would probably tack some modded marshall onto an AC30 preamp, cram it into a pair of EL34s and call it a day. A good master volume, a pair of decent speakers, and i would most likely never need another amp.

Re: AAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAARGH
My TSL wasn't particularly loud either. My '70s JMP was a beast to the point of being impractical- I couldn't push the thing hard enough with a band to make it worth it. I started gravitating toward smoother toans around that time- Shiva, Mesas of various flavors (even a Rec if you do it right and avoid Red/Modern like the unmentionable thing it is), even the Vox is smoover on top. (Actually very much so when wound up.) There's nothing wrong with fizz, fuzz and general harshness, and some people really make it work. I tend to avoid it when I'm using conventional distorted tones. An AC30 channel and a tweaked Marshally channel into a nice 50w back end and you'd have the last map a lot of guitarists would ever need.
