The only one i am not as into is the JCM, it sounds thinner/hollower than the others.

I agree with Mike on this one. For this particular riff, the 6505+ and the Recto are the top of the 4.

I'd have to hear it in context, I guess. I actually like all the tones you're getting (and IMO people who think all high gainers sound the same have tin ears. All four are very distinct, and it's not just EQ. No less different than four clean amps.)

I would I think go with the Recto without hearing the rest of the mix. The 800 is the farthest from the rest tone-wise. The Peavey sounds the most immediately in-your-face on the solo-ed clip, but it might just be louder. The ENGL I really like as well, but I've always liked those things when I've heard them for real, don't know why.

I like the riff, by the way, the dissonance of it. Is this you playing or a project you're recording or mixing?

It's most certainly me playing this one, for once. I'm working on putting out a death metal EP, and these are the style of riffs I've been coming up with for it. I don't know if I'm going to use this particular riff or not, but it'll show up in something sooner or later.


Re: tin ears... I'd have to agree with you. I've never played two 6505s, even, that sounded the same. Every amp sounds different, even amps from the same model line.


Engls tend to have that huge low mid grumble thing going on. Like a Recto, but a touch growlier and a lot tighter. That's what I've always liked about them, they really fill out a mix.

I wouldn't say that all high gain amps sound the same...

...but i would say that there is not enough difference between most high gain amps to obsess over.

Tin ears? Probably?

In a recording/reamping environment, it is worth splitting the hairs, but in the audience(live or consumer), none of it matters. Pick the tight flavor or the loose flavor, whatever works for you, make it happen.

I personally could see owning two high gainers, but three would be pushing it for me. The HC folks with 5+, simply have more money and time than they need. For me it gets uncomfortably close to TGP And The Search For Another Holy Tubescreamer. If you have to solo the amps in order to pick out the differences, IMO, you are listening too hard.

I mean that in a general sense. In a recording one, again, the microscope has a place. I think one just needs to remind one's self to step back from the thing every now and then. Aside from a very few near-cliche sounds (EMG81-5150, PRS-DualRectifierRed, etc) no one is going to be able to tell what the fuck you did to get there.

The problem with a lot of that sort of crew is they have a whole bunch that get dialed in to sound more-or-less the same, and it's usually not even that good a sound.

I mean, the stuff sure sounds different to me in the room if you don't crank the fuck out of the gain and can actually dial it in worth a damn? I don't think it's any worse than or dissimilar to, say, a Twin, an AC30 and a JC120 all clean; I mean, those are all pretty different flavors. I think high gainers by their nature tend to attract... some unsubtle playing and players though. And there is the whole tone questing thing; see above- dialing in everything to as similar as they can get versus letting 'em speak with their own voice. Defeats the whole point.

But I digress.

Re: ears- I'm certainly no arbiter of taste so I don't know any better than you. Like, I get the reason to obsess over it, 'cause there is a lot of subtlety and detail to be found there but I don't think, in general, people do a really good job of obsessing. Again, see above. And this is somewhere where yer talking really subtle subtleties due to the nature of the thing- it's a square wave generator, so I think even when the microscope isn't coming out the magnifying glass does a bit more.
