The rhythm section in Nevermore is just fucking massive.

Also the Jeff Loomis solo album came up in conversation today with a classmate... good to see metal is common ground here...

You will meet some weird metal cats at school, yo. Also; just listened to every King Crimson album in my possession.

I genuinely like Nevermore. I think Van Williams' drumming was one of their strong points. (I doubt they'll come back sans Loomis.) I always liked their marriage of what's largely, save for the Queensryche-ballady stuff, a pretty beastly grooving DM band with quirky, off-kilter dissonant clean vocals. Growls would have diminished that band. (Plus Warrell's into cool old gothrock, and he's a chef. Both of these are points in my book. ) They prove my point that clean vocals over a dissonant, abrasive heavy band can in fact work. The vocals just need to be written in such a way that the melody lines suit the music. They had their own sound.

Also, I saw them live on the Dead Heart tour. They were :rawk: . Then I went and bought the record. That one has held up for me. I can still dig it. :nods: They opened for In Flames, who I liked to go see. Nevermore, clean vocals and all (this is pre-clean vocal In Flames, where they might have one or two bits on a record) is a severely heavier band. In Flames, incidentally, was a lot more fun back then. The stylistic change and its shift toward a darker sound and vibe didn't, I think, suit them. And I like woe-is-me maudlin angst, but I really enjoyed them "back in the day" when they were a fun energetic band. The overall vibe was empowering-asskicking.

The Absent Lovers: Live in Montreal double album, but if it has to be a studio album.. Maybe Three of a Perfect Pair or Discipline? I am a Belew-era KC dood, but I like the 70's stuff too. But Belew is probably one of my favorite musicians so it's all about the 80's material for me.

Love the riffs and songs, production is dicks. The solo makes me think of some old Finnish death metal. Gnar.

Sounds like the drums were just like, an SM57 pointed at his kit and the triggers.

I would think their music would be something up your alley. Check out The Black Flux.

That is odd as hell. I dig it!

The first is like Russian Circles with sea chanties for vocals. The second, the pirates are replaced with the announcer from a sixties action tv show.

I will definitely acquire and listen further. :isay:

The record is definitely weirder.

Guitars sounds like a cross between Duane Dennison and i don't know, something like Deathspell Omega played slower.

The vocals i will have to see how i get used to. Because they are right odd. :huzzah:

Fuck! This is... metal, technically?

I want to know what the guitarist is using 'cause that is not a "metal" tone.

I think the vocals are cool as hell.

I like this.
