If you play heavy, it is heavy.
We've all heard shitass local d-bags who use gallons of distortion but sound pissweak.
I contend these are observable troofs.
I can tell you this for sure: if i ever find myself in another metal band, i intend to use something very similar to my current homebrew map. Maybe with more wattage, but otherwise, quite similar.

Considering my past metalband ampchoices have included '76 Marshall, Shiva, Stage I Stiletto... If I found myself not playing bass in one I'd probably do something similar, to be an asshole, mostly. It would work.

I will also say however, that i still very badly want a 5150.
I don't know what i would end up using it for i guess, but that is like the only commercial amp that i really want.
Hmmm. I wonder if the clean channel could be modded into the preamp i am currently using...

As for the guitar sound on The Black Flux, it sounds almost exactly to me like Duane Dennison's from the Jesus Lizard stuff, so i would guess something similar, a brightish guitar like a telecaster or a strat, into something big and loud and not very distorted, like a hiwatt or a marshall turned halfway up.
I became curious and went looking, and at least recently, this is what they were playing through:
Eide running a Firebird into a Marshall, the other dood running a strat into a rectifier.
Then in the video there is a third guitarist playing an SG into an Orange(and a rectifier?)?
Also found this shot, which looks like the firebird into a JVM?

Huh, didn't know they used three guitarists. I am going to have to experiment a bit and see if I can come up with those sounds in my axe-fx. I really dig that sound. Thanks Chris

That is kind of rad.
Todgo, have you heard Liars? Specifically: They Threw Us All In A Trench And Stuck A Monument On Top?

I haven't heard them before but I like it. Kind of reminds me of Test Icicles.

Mayhap acquire that rekkid and check it out. They are kind of punkrock but kind of dancey at it? Their other records get weird in different ways (that sometimes border on the tedious), and go other places, but that one record, i like a fair bit for its dancey electropunk snottiness.

Posting Praxis in the Be My Bitch thread of course made me think to go and listen to them some more. And they kick ass, as well they should. They are awesome and I love their records.

Re: What Are U Listening To Right Now: Home Surgery Instruct
I am listening to the Butch Vig/"Devonshire Mix" of Nevermind. Like the Steve Albini mix for In Utero there isn't a whole shitload between it and the released version, just certain obvious less glossy choices made. Unlike the Albini In Utero mix though, it is however, obviously better. It just strips away some of the treatments so that it sounds a bit more like drums in a room, like a fuzz pedal in a room, like a singer in a room, rather than the massively unnatural behemoth(that is what? a snare?! bullshit!) of devices that the original released mix possesses.

Re: What Are U Listening To Right Now: Home Surgery Instruct
Chris, I'll have to give that a listen. I feel some of the records from around that time suffer because they still have '80s hair farmer production applied to them. (See the drum sound on AIC's Dirt... Holy gated reverb Batman!) While I was never a Pearl Jam fan, drying up Ten was a good move. Now, by '93-'94 it seems like they'd gotten the hang of things and records, for a brief period of time, major releases, sounded really damn good.
