On this day, Oct. 14, in 1912, while campaigning in Milwaukee, former President Theodore Roosevelt is shot by saloonkeeper John Schrank. With the bullet still in his chest, Roosevelt delivered his speech.
The shot was slowed by Roosevelt's steel eyeglass case and a copy of his speech. Police quickly arrested Schrank, who declared, "Any man looking for a third term ought to be shot." Schrank said the ghost of President William McKinley told him to avenge his death by killing Roosevelt, who had left the Republican Party to found the Bull Moose Party and seek a third term.
During his speech, Roosevelt showed the bloody manuscript and said, "It takes more than one bullet to kill a Bull Moose."
Schrank was committed to a mental hospital. He died in 1943.
