He had an interesting despot fashion angle for sure, working the Fauxmilitary Garb side as well as the Gloriously Ridiculous Fearless Leadergod Silken Robe action. And while my own tastes in Tyrant Vogue might lean towards the non-military angle, i think he made it work okay for himself, er... "going both ways", as it were.

He had a good run i guess... I would suppose that no matter how rich the motherfucker was off screwing over his people, he still wasn't likely to be able to find a country that would be willing to harbor him, not at this point in his career, anyhow.

I would guess that he had little choice but to hang around and gamble on the revolution failing. Trying to make a run for it at the very end was just straight up futility fight/flight taking hold, and far too late, at that.

He should perhaps have aimed more forcefully to go out in a haze of cocaine and nerve gas that would block out the sun in the region for several weeks instead, but hey, i am pretty sure that sort of thing is a fair bit easier proposed than executed...

It would be pretty sweet if he had the fortitude to make his final battle one of psychotropic warfare. Then again it would take tremendous foresight to think of filling the sprinkler system with LSD.

And that's the problem with most of these d00ds. A true supervillain would have this all ready to go. Rebels storm yer compound and one thing gets set on fire? Bam! Everyone who walks by the area is doused with something containing liquid LSD. Rebels are now tripping mad balls whilst you make your way to the escape pod.

Were I tyrant of something, I'd have one palace that was purported to be my residence (but was not) that was in fact an un-navigable maze full of bizarre deathtraps.

Incidentally, I find the notion of a legal inquest into the circumstances of his death absurd.

I get the notions of fairness and dignity and decency and all, but really? Put down your White Liberal Guilt for a moment here. I am not concerned re: the ultimate end of a tyrant who oppressed his people for four decades. I really don't care whether he died of injuries sustained in his capture or was killed by the crowd or otherwise. The circumstances of his kicking it are of interest for historical purposes only. There is no legal blame, I feel, to be had here, in the extrajudiciary killing of a dictator. (Nor is there such a thing as a humane execution, and any trial of such a man is a show trial.) One of the ultimate extenuating circumstances, if not the to say "nothing to see here, move along" to the death of an unarmed man. Despots die in revolutions; to try them only to hang or shoot them is merely a formality.



I seem to remember Burkina Faso being one of a few. African backwaters, all, who would likely have gladly taken his money. (And likely turned him over to the authorities after seizing as much of his assets as possible.) That's about the level we're dealing with, papers saying "I am Miguel Sanchez" and Buttfuck-The-Middle-Of-Nowhere.
