Post Re: I am starting to have a problem with writing music ...
I think i have decided that a large part of the music that i have written that i don't like the sound of, is generally quite excessively, non-violent.

I think that musically, that has been a good stretch for me, but in the end, i feel like i have simply not been letting myself write as abrasive sorts of things as i believe that my brain really wants to.

It has been kind of an interesting revelation for me.

Probably, seeing as you're fourteen meters tall.

Re: influences and writing, part of it, for me at least, is the context they come up in. Re-purpose things to suit your own ends. I was never one to shy away from learning stuff for fear I'd start to sound like them- what of that influence popped up- which in some cases was not much- was already there anyhow. I mostly can't be arsed to learn cover songs though.

That being said, in the days I read guitar magazines (I liked Guitar One, as it had the most lessons of the common ones ten years ago or so), I would go through and try and play everything in there I could, even poorly, just to take a stab at it, regardless of whether it was something I liked or was interested in. The more outside or peripheral stuff is fun to tamper with. Also, look into the influences of your influences.

I find it near impossible to intentionally write- or at least start writing- a song though. :idk: Ideas happen. Developing them, that I can do, but I need a starting point.

Also, on frustration with what you're writing: I spent a long time kicking myself for writing lots of metal, because I didn't really want to, but that's what I knew how to write as a guitarist. Breaking out of your stylistic box takes a while.

Yeah that post was meant for the "How's it going?" thread, which is what I get for browsing multiple tabs of Maps.

Anywho, I too rarely sit down with the intent to write a song. I just dick around until something sounds cool, and then I develop it. But recently the stuff I have been playing when I dick around has sounded like ... well ... dick :idk:

So a little inspiration, a little practice and a little more focus on what I want to sound like and I think I can starting playing cool things again. I have seen a vast improvement since when I started this thread.

Like I said above, I would take a break. Also, listen to pandora radio when youre just sitting at home.

Its important to know your limits. When Im trying to write @ a time when I dont feel like writing, I tend to want to write something for the sake of writing something even if I know I wont like it. Then Ill go back, listen to it and think " this chit sucks wtf was I thinking" which eventually will just continue the cycle of me trying to add on to a song I dont like. Im like a crackhead when it comes to writing. I have to do it no matter what.

My best writing IMO has come from me barely thinking about what I want to write. It just happens.

Smoke some weed. Play in a different tuning. With 2 fingers only.

I have the same problem, so I'm doing the same shit you're doing.

Except I've been learning shitloads of Pantera.

Simply because Pantera is a band that I love, but my music sounds nothing like Pantera. Also, Dime's rhythm skills were pretty killer.
