Post Hmm. Stick quandary halfthought.
Fucking aboot as i am prone to do, i have begun to note some things.

1. I play a lot better when i use normal-ass 5Bs.

2. My drums sound a lot better when i use giganticious DC9s.

Kind of odd, but makes sense. Smaller sticks = lighter, quicker, bouncier, easier to control and to boss around. And bigger sticks = more leverage(they are almost 2" longer), more weight, more head movement on impact, bigger/wider sounds.

I guess i could try to go back in and experiment with 2Bs to se if i can ind middleground...

Alternately, i wonder if smaller drums might help the smaller sticks balance out better. As it is, i just feel like i have to slam the everliving shit out of them to make the toms and snare do the right thing. Maybe some day if/when i build some drums, i will experiment with smaller snare and toms... Of course, then i will probably find myself missing the proper juddness of the bigger ones, eh. :idk:

2Bs rule.

Not feeling small drums. The 14" tom on my new kit for instance, not delivering the cajones I expect. :red:

Agreed with Geoff. 2Bs. Is the shit-slamming specifically with the 5Bs? My thoroughly ungood drumming sounds much better with the heavier sticks; the kit doesn't have enough sonic weight to it with the smaller sticks, and no amount of shit-slamming helps me there. So: 2Bs. Which should be a little more reasonable than the giant marching sticks.

Might it be a tuning-related thing, too?

The shitslamming is solely a 5B thing. The DC9s, you just have to let fall via gravity, and they are fuckloud. The problem is, that they weigh easily twice as much and are much longer, so for anything properquick, it takes too much doing to get them to change directions at ease. Even when i was a lot stronger in the arms from bmx-ing all the time, the DC9s were too much, and i basically blew my right elbow out when i played in that powerviolence band(which is also pretty much the biggest reason why i don't blastbeat anymore these days, shit flares right back up quick).

Tuning-wise, i am about where i have to be for my drumsizes and the specific head types i have on.

My old kit was ten, twelve, sixteen floor...

This one is ten twelve, fourteen. I need the extra thundrar in the floor tom. It doesn't feel right without it.

The MLX toms though... they are killer.

I don't mean to ramble about my own shit in your thread though, I guess what I meant was... small drums are not the answer!

Oh, for sure, floortoms need to be at least 16". I would actually like to get my paws on an 18" at some point. I almost don't consider them toms somehow. I tune them strangely compared to how i do my normal racktoms as well. They need some odd detuning stuff, IMO, to sound/feel right.

Also, i am completely all for any rambling about anything. Support it fully. Shit is too slow 'round here, not to let all the threads wander where they may.

That said, i am a little bit leaning towards a smaller(diameter) snare for a tighter shorter sort of sound. I just don't know if a smaller target will get along with the loose manner in which i hit the things. Might just make me hit the rims and my leg a lot. :red:

14 isn't a floor tom. It's a large rack tom on legs instead of a stand. :red:

Re: a smaller diameter snare, wouldn't be the worst idea. A friend of mine switched to a smaller diameter (still 6.5" deep, IIRC) acrylic Pork Pie snare from a brass DW and has been pleased with the results. And so have I- he plays the metals and wanted exactly that, a tight, short crack!, and it delivers. He keeps one moongel on there for the faster stuff; I prefer the sound of the snare without, but that's just me and it's not my kit. I like a bit of ring. The tuning is pretty damn high- the top head is very... bouncy; I've never had an easier time doing ghost notes and one-hand nonsense than on that snare- but it surprisingly still has some depth to it. It's not a pingy piccolo sound by any stretch.

Yeah small snares are cool in my books... so are small small toms. Small drums that makes high noises. But when it comes to drums that are supposed to sound low, they best be big and shit. :dukes:

Yarr, 13x7 or 8 would probably be where i started. I can tighten my snare up with dampening, but i kind of hate the way it works then. It feels/sounds unnatural or something. I think that a smaller diameter will help keep the shit in line, but tightened in a natural sort of way. It will ring less because there is less to ring, sorts of biz.

Besides, i kind of just increasingly... want to build a snare. :red:

Personal experience with the above-mentioned smaller-diameter snare lends credence to this. It doesn't ring much as it is, even tuned very tightly. (With the moongel, it doesn't ring at all, really.) And dampening the top head is gonna change the way it responds.

So build a snare. From random scrap wood. :red:

Classier than, say, a pine snare.

Going to go for the smaller diameter/fairly deep drum, then?

Yarr, 13x7 or 13x8.

Also, diameter might depend on what i find in the basement for hardware and rims. That is actually the most expensive part of a snare, all the damn lugs and rims and tension rods and strainers and hardware bullshit. My intent, of fucking course, is to do it considerably more ghetto than all that biz. :monocle:

Ah, chair legs and all... a stave snare indeed!
