Chris is the Shit
Sort of a spinoff of my tubescreamer thread... The TS-5 of notable tone was mailed to Chris and he did his thing with it, rehousing it, swapping out the bad switch, and getting rid of some ruinous noise. Of course he went above and beyond just that. Now anyone who's done these sorts of dealings with Chris knows that his packaging is unique and fantastic. A mastery of foam and blue painter's tape was displayed. But that is nothing compared to what was within. What was a cheap-ish factory pedal is now a fucking work of art. Kudos to you sir. And a thousand thanks, you fucking nailed it. As for the toan... sadly I'm a busy fucker so I haven't fully put it through its paces yet, but so far it seems like the old pedal (this is a good thing!), maybe a little more refined (my imagination?) Oh, I also got some pickups I ordered for my tele the same day, so it was like Christmas all over again. I suspect I'll make a clip with all the gears mentioned in this thread, sometime.

Ah good, i am glad you got it in one piece. I hope it doesn't sound too different, the things that got removed, had to get removed, so there wasn't really any way to avoid it. I don't know if you intend to run it with a battery, but if you do there is really only one way for it to fit(and this may be obvious, i don't know), with the thing flat, like this: There is really not very much room in there so just use care in putting the battery in and out.

Re: Chris is the Shit
Yarr, it came out pretty decently i thought. There were a few different spacefrogs/toads that i played with before i wound up there. (This was while i was stuck in Illinois, so i had way too much time to work on it. ) Here are some of them: Had to think about what a proper toad/frog actually even looks like first, because when i first checked my brain, it didn't really know somehow? Was almost this but i couldn't quite get it to work right: The one it ended up being: Some alternate colors:

Re: Chris is the Shit
Oh, also Geoff, because the pots were all replaced, there is a decent chance that the settings you used to use might be in slightly different places than they used to be. Aside from the more obvious pile of components that were removed/swapped, that could be a reason that things don't sound quite the same. Unlike the other things though, by playing with different levels for the gain/tone you might be able to find the correct sound in there.

Re: Chris is the Shit
Holy shit, that is brilliant. The inside of it looks like fine work, and the outside... Is what Geoff said. That is mightyfine. That reminds me I discovered a broken Metal Zone in a box with some Hideous Yellow Foam under my dresser that I never did send. Outside of swapping out brokenshit for working parts and removing the original switching system, what all was done to it, anyhoo? And what does the change to the switching entail? Also, Bank Gothic for the font?

Re: Chris is the Shit
Geoff didn't want anything done to it that would change the way it sounded, as it was an old favorite, so really it was just about fixing the thing and getting it to fit in the metal box(the TS5 is one of the plastic soundtank ibanezes). For the switching, almost half of the components have to be bypassed/removed. The original style is a typical boss/ibanez/etc flipflop transistor thing. Lots of parts remain in the circuit when the pedal is "bypassed". I don't particularly dislike the system at all, and it does mean that you can have a really simple and potentially non-clicking switch to actuate it, but Geoff's pedal was having all kinds of bad noise from some transistors and probably some caps that were sad, so i just pulled all of it out and replaced it with just a 3PDT that will provide a proper hard bypass(meaning f'rinstance, that the pedal will bypass even if the battery dies). As long as there is a good schematic available for the pedal it is pretty simple to do, though kind of a PITA, as the PCBs are fragile and not really designed for coming apart after they leave the factory. Have to go slow and careful, but not so slow that traces start lifting and shit. Bank Gothic is one of my favorites, indeed. I don't remember 100% but there is about a 98% chance that that is it, though it is worth noting that due to my love of the font, i do have a small stack of remarkably similar ones as well.

Re: Chris is the Shit
Maybe that one needs to be its own thing, whatever that winds up being. The sheer amount of frogs makes me think a delay or reverb.
