Haven't listened to these guys in a while. This sort of thing reminds me why I this band. I love the sad bastard rock thing they do more than the metal- and they are/were a brilliant metal band. Something like this, though, rates really, really high for me.

You know the original yeah?
Aside from being tuned down a step or so, i am surprised that Opeth played it so close. But i probably shouldn't be, as the original already sounds like something maybe they had written.

I am familiar. It was a friend's mentioning the original version that made me dig this out.
It's a fine song, regardless of who's playing it.

Been listening to Bloc Party quite a bit recently. I never gave them much of a chance when they were first quite popular. Chris I think you might like their twinguitar-ness

Yarr, i have been into their sound since Silent Alarm came out. For some reason i was also at first resistant to them, but my brother in law was playing them with some regularity when i was there, and they grew on me.

Loves it. Such a great song.

Listening to this cause I am sampling the chorus in one of my really Brian Wilson-y songs where I do not want to sing anything myself, cause it is supposed to be really truly pleasant sounding. And I don't think I could really do that.
It might be really sort of irritating for me to hear though, so it will probably just remain an instrumental bit. But more importantly; hearing that shit stripped of most all the instrumental bits is nuts.

Yeah same here, I didn't like em when they were big over here. Silent Alarm seems to be the best one, the rest are a bit too electronic-sounding, not enough guitar interplay goodness.

Y'know, I don't have any of their records, surprisingly, and I probably should. One of those random bands I've sorta forgot about over the years who are amenable to my aesthetic, given my post-punk love. Most of the revival sort of indie bands I didn't spend too much time with. Seeing this post made me hit up their Wiki page to see when the last thing they came out with was, and one of the first things I see is a list of influences- The Cure, Siouxsie And The Banshees, Mogwai and Radiohead- and you know how much I hate those bands... Never snagged one of their rekkids though. (Bloc Party, I mean. Obviously I have a fair bit of the others if not the full discography of all four.) I should probably ask my housemate if she has anything of theirs for the ease of it. I trust her taste in things.

I would give Silent Alarm a go first, really like this album a lot after some more listening. I think the newer ones are kind of a bit too electro-poppy.
edit - actually, the album Four is pretty awesome as well

Re: What Are U Listening To Right Now: Home Surgery Instruct
They definitely do IMO benefit from the guitar clarity, it always sounded odd to me how weird and muddy their guitar sound was against the generally always clean and crisp drumsound. I almost find the vocals too clear now though.
I do think that this sounds a bit less unique than the earlier stuff though. The other stuff didn't really always sound good but it did have a distinct sonic signature to it. Can't fault them for trying something different for them though.

I can't turn up and blast at this hour, but the guitars do sound a lot clearer than I am used to hearing from them- considering they're Marshall guys I found the indistinct guitars a bit unusual. I'd really have to hear it loud to get a better sense of the drums, but they do seem well done. Who recorded/mixed this one? Mr. Kernon again?

Bowie.
I don't know. We all know I heart Bowie. I'll need to hear the rest of the record. I suppose it's silly, as I adore said artist for his work in the decade before I was born. I always did think he was one of those whose voice aged very, very well.
I'm more excited, though, by far about the new NIN. Adrian goddamn Belew on lead guitar. My housemate and my band are sooo into that, being big NIN and Crimso fans. I told Ms. Jen that the other day when she got home and she just fucking stood there. I'm irked at the lack of a KC rekkid with Gavin Harrison behind the kit. No, this does bother me, Mr. Fripp. But NIN with Mr. Belew? HELLS YES SILENT BOB.
