Yeah man, I have had that thing for a little now. The old school "evil" DM riffs are a really nice change.

I'm loving it. Really like the production too, nothing is 'overcooked' so to speak...

Converge, currently Jane Doe. Can't believe I have got to the ripe old age of 24 without listening to them, so good.

Re: What Are U Listening To Right Now: Home Surgery Instruct
I like the anti-rock aesthetic here- bury the vocals as deep as can be. And the slowmetal. Also, the beautiful guitar lead @ 2:47. This is actually pretty cool.

To me, that is how all harsh vocals should be mixed. Maybe all vocals period.

Re: What Are U Listening To Right Now: Home Surgery Instruct
The amount of things this band does correct is just stupid. The brutal death chug influence on this new one took it over the top for me, for sure.

Re: What Are U Listening To Right Now: Home Surgery Instruct
It almost always sounds appropriate for the hardstuff. I want to hear it fighting to be heard over the band. If it's super in-your-face pop vocal mix for that, that immediately turns me off to the record- it sounds silly. If it's Leonard Cohen, say, I want it to sound like he's right there, or, even, the compressed almost film dialogue or broadcast things one can do with a vocal. With death metal, etc.? Totally inappropriate; absurd. The aesthetic is completely wrong for the genre. We all know how this music actually sounds: the guitars are a wall of violence, the drummer is laying into the snare like it did something untoward to his sister, and the vocalist is yelling over the mob that he'll kick your ass if he ever finds out who you are. Production values on this are, I'd say, appropriate. And I like popvocals. Always sounds wrong in the hardstuff and always has. Even back in '90s when metal production started to get less rough-and-ready sounding, hearing a DM vocalist mixed as if they were a pop singer was absurd to me. Why is the vocal so fucking out front? It's almost incidental to the band; I want the guitars and drums slamming me in the face. That's the whole point of listening to this and I suspect what the majority of its audience wants. The trend toward more glossyshiny- don't get me wrong; I liked hearing things that were recorded and mixed well- diminished, I think, the aggression of things; took the balls out of it. But it went too far in the other direction. Now, the artsier bands I'll give a pass on the production values. But that's an entirely different side of metal- which I differentiate from rock; it's its own thing and has been for many years now. Straight-up hardstuff should sound like, well, what it is, warts and all. The technicians are boring anyhow.

Re: What Are U Listening To Right Now: Home Surgery Instruct
That reminds me, too, of Isis' Panopticon... Which is as artsy as metal gets- a large chunk of the thing is not metal at all and actually quite pretty- and the vocals there are as low in the mix as you'll ever hear.
