Re: What Are U Listening To Right Now: Home Surgery Instruct
I found the tumblr myself. I was looking up Kurt Ballou studio stuff and recalled that you had recorded with him and googled "i. Valdeva" and that was one of the first things to pop up.

This is pretty righteous. Math-ish indie stuff with cool vocals.

Heehee. Somehow i bet that he would like not to remember that he recorded that. I really enjoyed it though.
Aslo: That is actually him playing one of the guitars on "Figurine". In the intro, the skronky part.

Yeah I went and scooped up that 2009 album you posted. Noice stuff. I like the Marshally guitars and metally grindy drums a whole bunch. I wonder what that cymbal that goes 'pchoo pchoo' is.

Yeah, the later record has a much more modern production and just a generally bigger sort of sound, but, interestingly, otherwise the rock sounds just about the same, which is always nice to see in a band that has been kicking around for a long time, with a rotating cast of members.
Even the early stuff is pretty grindy for the time. There were a lot of fast bands in '81-'87, but most of them were fast in a different way.
I fucking love the vocalist too. Unique and awesome. Reminds me, voice tone-wise, of Guy from the Rites Of Spring stuff, only gone completely rotten in the vocal chords.
My friend said that they were also pretty amazing live back in the day.

Because I have to know if this sucks or not.
At least it doesn't sound like an Ozzy solo rekkid. Eeeew. But I think the modern production values diminish the Sabbath-ness of the thing. I think I would dig it more if it sounded like 1973, honestly.
Probably would have been cooler with Steve Albini or Matt Bayles or someone along those lines behind the desk. The sonics of the thing are just too modern.
Yeah, Brad Wilk isn't Bill Ward, but he's a good drummer; I feel the production's a much bigger minus than the drumming, which is acceptable. He's not a bad choice if you have to go with a "known" drummer who could do the Sabbath thing. (Though if I had to pick, I'd say Matt Cameron. But that wasn't my call.)

I am in an odd mood tonight:

MSN Music's Robert Christgau said that Rose succeeds on "his own totally irrelevant terms" and asserted, "Since he's no longer capable of leading young white males astray, this effort isn't just pleasurable artistically. It's touching on a human level. Noble, even. I didn't think he had it in him.

Well, this is different. It's Shane Embury of Napalm Death, Mark E. Smith of The Fall, Chris Catalyst from Sisters Of Mercy, and some dude from The Wildhearts.

Been listening to this band for a few weeks now and they just so happened to come through last night, and I'd have to say it was the most cleanly played and performed show I have ever seen. The live mix was killer too, probably the best show I have been to up to this point.
