Another example of how they made things better back in the day. And while I can't speak for its efficacy as a cough syrup, I'm fairly certain this delightful concoction would do something, and something worthwhile enough you'd feel like you got your money's worth, whatever it was.

Yarr, classic and important safety informations once came to us through our cigarettes. Another, i believe, of the trickster-ish collaborations between BELT and Safety.

That and of course, before OSHA and the unions, our cigarettes were the only thing that we could trust would be looking out for our own better interests.

Also, reminds me of a bunch of drawings i did not too long ago for something (else) that never got finished, using proper tree cutting methods as a graphical element:

ok, so Master Tinkerer, which method worked best? I mean the placement of cut 3.

Basically cut three (the felling cut) only needs to be above the point where cuts one and two meet. That is what causes the tree to fall in the direction of the plane outlined by cut one. Mainly you don't want cut three to be level with where one and two meet, and you NEVER want it to be below that.

The other main thing is that that space indicated by the vertical lines be maintained. That is the felling hinge and it is what directs the tree to fall in a straight line where it is aimed. If it is too thin, it won't do what it is supposed to, and if it is too thick, the tree might not fall, but rather just dangerously teeter at the ready to fall, kind of when/where-ever.

Basically, the first sketch is not really correctly drawn. And in most of the others i would probably put the felling cut just a little higher. In the olde dayes, some guides had that felling cut level with the first two directional cuts, but these days they generally suggest one uses one of the last three pictured(kind of all in one drawing there).

There are lots of (perhaps more interesting) ways to do it wrong though.

I assume cut #3 is the one that actually drops the tree?

What is your preferred method of stump removal?

Having dug out a few stumps, and have had them ground. Both of the above suggestions are excellent ideas
