Fock Cam, I'm so jealous of you. Sitting in on that crazy ass session. With Sean Reinert, my favourite drummer. :red: Give us details on the mics, the processing, etc. I don't think I can drop 200$ to download the thing. :mexican:

How did you go about getting these opportunities again? They're happening near you in Washington or are you having to travel far?

In terms of your EQ convo... yeah, there is this whole "wisdom" about using subtractive EQ instead of additive. They say it lowers your noise floor. That's dumb, really, because if you raise that level slider it's additive EQ again, ie there isn't actually such a distinction. Nevertheless subtractive EQ tends to be less selective or 'spiky' so it seems more natural and level, and that is why I would prefer it generally. Though additive does have its place, like lifting the transient out of a kick drum or something (in which case narrowly subtracting that frequency from one's wall of guitars also helps).

Post Re: Blog/tweet about shit in your life here
Part of the "cutting is always better than boosting" thing comes from live sound, too, and EQing a PA system is a bit of a different animal than mixing a record. (Also, lots of cheap + shitty EQs that are often harsh, noisy or both. And the risk of feedback.) I'm generally of the opinion that if I want less of something, I'll cut it, and if I want more of something, I'll boost it, as opposed to going out of my way to cut other things to vaguely approximate what boosting it would be like. (Why cut things with three bands with different curves to get a result I can probably get better, easier, by boosting with one?)

I'd also posit some of the folks who say you should never boost haven't used a really good EQ. Even a digital one. I'm not Captain Engineering or anything, but I've used some Nice Shit™ IRL, and even a plain old Soundcraft Ghost boosts things just fine. Fire up an API 550 or a Pultec clone and tell me never to boost again...? :eekass:

Like Geoff says, it's all really dependent on what you want to do with it. I will say I'm more a booster than a cutter, but there's some things I tend to shape in part or predominantly by cutting (drum overheads/room, synths) and some by boosting (guitars- I rarely cut on guitars outside of a highpass below whatever the fundamental of the low string is) but most stuff is a mix, depending on what I want to do with it. Bass guitar and kick drum I can be pretty brutal with both boosts and cuts to re-shape the low end. Not for less or more of it so much as making the two play nice together.

It appears Ms. Jessica recieved a strange package in the post today:

As amusing as it is though, we're donating it, not keeping it. We don't have a use for all that stuff. Poor children do.

I have made friends with the dude who is the director of the audio division of that company, I actually am going to be getting a job there pretty soon, it looks like..! I was supposed to have started like 2 months ago, but. :red: They've another HQ in LA, but the audio shit all happens here. The whole deal is new to their company, that was actually all Finn, the dude who runs the shit's idea. They typically do photography classes and other whatnots.

Eyal typically but not necessarily uses:

Audix D6 for kick stuff (sometimes a D112 though, depending)
421s for toms, though sometimes 57s as well
57s on snare top and bottom
414s and U47s and all kinds of other shit

Really, it's all pretty run of the mill shit in terms of what you would see at a fancy studio. One thing to note is that Eyal is absolutely in love with API preamps for pretty much anything and everything, but uses them on toms mostly and runs them pretty hot. Dude is very much into EQ boost and not just subtractive. Granted, he's using some really nice stuff but he definitely was fairly heavy handed with tom mics particularly.

Yesterday kind of really fucking sucked for me. So there is this hamburger joint called Holy Chuck. They have a burger called The Holy Ghost. You have to sign a waiver to eat it, and the waiver warns of a risk of permanent injury or death. It's three beef patties with ghost pepper inside, each covered and dripping with ghost pepper extract, with roast ghost pepper crumbled on top. Extract. So this is hotter than actual ghost peppers. It cost forty bucks, and if you eat it in ten minutes without a drink you get a hundred dollars. So I tried it.This was a poor decision. The manager was watching me and timing me, a crowd was gathered. I had one bite and I was like, "this... this isn't food. This is poison." One more bite to confirm, and yes, all internal indicators were warning me to discontinue the activity. So I gave up.

Now let me tell you, I am no slouch with hot food. Sriracha is like ketchup to me, I eat the hottest shit all the time. But this isn't about how much pain I can take in my mouth, it was about how much abuse my internal organs are willing to allow. My stomach was starting to hurt, more and more. I started to get light headed. Next thing I know, I have passed out (gracefully) at the restaurant table. After slowly waking up I sit there, resting with my head on the table for fifteen minutes, feeling totally out of it. I eventually get up and my friends help me to the bathroom. I didn't know what I intended to do in there, so I sat on the toilet... and puked beside it. Puked and puked until I was dry heaving. Now my situation was starting to improve... it felt great to drink water, to dilute the contents of my stomach...

I went home and ate a tub of yogurt. I am embarrassed, but also amazed at the sheer toxicity of that hamburger. Two bites was all it took to ruin me. If I finished it I'd have probably gone to a hospital.

Somehow I completely missed this.

1. Yes the BL Keystones are great. I'm thinking of getting a set for my yet to arrive Power Tele..
2. How do we not have piktars of the Holy Ghost exhibition? I do not recall them on FB either? and... how does one pass out gracefully?

They really are! What a glassy, pleasant top end.

I have a pic of the form I signed at least. The one where they mention risk of death.

One passes out gracefully by resting their head on the table as if they'd like a nap, and then waking up from their blackout in that same position. It really sucks waking up, like being a computer booting painfully slow...

None, all to myself unless I struggle for money in which case I'll rent a room out :isay: Music room is being planned and I need some kind of home gym setup in the shed.

Quite fantastically, I've only just remembered I ordered one of these in a stupor last night: https://bareknucklepickups.co.uk/main/p ... piledriver

Just the bridge pickup. I can actually justify it to myself if not praise my recklessness, because the stock bridge pickup in this guy is pretty weakish. It sounds really cool, I just need more output and a lot more balls considering what I play/am playing through.

I am sure you will get some very soon.

Okay dooders, so: How do you mic a cab? I realize that is a very general question, but I am sort of looking for a very general answer. :red:

I am having some serious troubles getting what I think is a truly awesome guitar tone.

I have always done 2-3 mics, but the one that was always prominent was a 57 about 2-3 inches off the grille about 3 inches from the cone. Second mice about ear height 4 to 6 feet from cab and one much further Back for room mic

Okay, well, you have my old KSM27, and a Beta 57, which isn't a Beta 58, but it'll do: place the KSM27 at the edge of the dustcap about 2" back. There's only so close you can get it with the shockmount anyhow. Place the Beta 57 next to it about 2" back, coming in at a 45º angle, from the side closer to the edge of the cone, not the center of the dust cap. Make sure you're not getting any weird phasing with the placement, but I never had any issues here. Add a room mic to taste if you'd like.

To further elaborate, generally speaking I'd use a combination of either a dynamic or ribbon, and a condenser, and I'd usually do the 45º thing with multiple mics. Or with a single mic, especially if it's a dynamic.

Also, and possibly overlooked gear-wise: get a good old-school EQ and patch it in whilst recording, assuming you're using an external preamp, which you almost certainly are. If you're using the ART over SPIDF, there's an insert point for each channel on the back, so you can continue to run the digital out with outboard shizzle patched in.

Neve EQ clone: http://www.zenproaudio.com/golden-age-eq-73.aspx
API EQ clones: http://classicapi.com/catalog/index.php?cPath=22_117_119 (need 500-series rack)

I know there's other decent EQs that aren't crazy 'spensive, but these I remember off the top of my head. Both about three bills new; troll Ebay or GS or the like for a used one.

Post Re: Blog/tweet about shit in your life here
I stick a 57 right on the damn cone, and back it up a bit. I make sure the impedence is corrected with one of them special cables. Then I get another mic, anything that can withstand the volume, whatever I feel might help (from an LDC to a scooped sounding drum mic, whatevs) and I put it anywhere.

So basically I have a winning formula for the 57, which I am very much devoted to using, and then I add something else to add exactly that.

It happens in a room that is carpeted and has fabric and egg cartons on the walls, so my miced guitars are pretty much super dry.
