Re: Blog/tweet about shit in your life here
Yeah even my wife and I, who are a healthy, young and moderately wealthy married couple, are not trying to have kids anytime soon. If it doesn't make sense at the time, I wouldn't want to go through it. Especially if you guys weren't serious enough about each other.
I'm sure this hasn't been the easiest of times, but glad to see you back in proper form.

Re: Blog/tweet about shit in your life here
Yarr, tom, that is a tough one. Years ago in my yout, before i fully entered cave life, i found myself spending time and stress in those people-and-brainspaces, and it was kind of rotten. That is a difficult situation, much easier for dudes top say they don't want a kid, than it is for the ladies. So the process of sorting things out can be pretty hard on both. Sorry you wound up there, but glad there was some sort of resolution for ye.
Welcome back, sir.

Damn, Tom. That is some scary shit, indeed. Unfortunate such things have to happen, but I am glad the most reasonable action was taken. Good to have ya back, dawgus.

Re: Blog/tweet about shit in your life here
I dunno I could have dealt with it if I had to but I really didn't want to haha. So glad I can focus on things I want to do again rather than that few weeks where I was worrying about money, responsibility and all that crap. Pretty sure I have a few new grey hairs on my head from the stress I'mma treat myself to a new guitar when I've sorted a few bits for my car

Re: Blog/tweet about shit in your life here
Yo dawgies, y'all got any recommendations on 12" bass drivers? My buddy Ryan and I are gonna be converting this old, superfucked Ampeg V2 cab I have had around forever into two 2x12s. Cabs been cannibalized and only one of the original Altecs is in it, and it's probably toast. There's some random 30 watt woofer in there that just shouldn't be there, so there's probably some fucked up load issues. And I have indeed sent high watt bass amps into this fucker not knowing what was going on with the speaker setup, so I imagine some bad shit has happened. Never ran it for very long, cause it would emit a horrible buzzing that always led me to be like, "Okay, still doesn't work".
Anyhow, any tips? Speakers, desired ohmage, etc?

Re: Blog/tweet about shit in your life here
My bassist has a couple of *x12 guitar cabs he popped PA speakers in and called them bass cabinets. The results are surprising.

Also, soon ... Because for a lot of reasons, but most of all it's gonna be fun as hell. Especially if I get another Power Engine 60 in the future for stereo.

Dev if you are going to use that up in NY, a friend of mine here has a PE 60 for sale... you may have better connections to get one, but just wanted to throw that out there.

For now the PE is staying in raleigh, but there is a chance I will get one for NYC if my neighbors turn out to not hate us.

Re: Blog/tweet about shit in your life here
That is sort of the route I was considering heading. However, my main concern is lack of high-end.. The bass cab half would be almost solely used with fingerstyle playing, so a little bite is kinda crucial.

Re: Blog/tweet about shit in your life here
PA speakers are full range, and based on our experiments (my bassist and I are huge fucking ghetto-gear nerds) are super fucking picky about the cab. He happened to have a bunch on hand, and we just swapped them around in cabs to see what we liked.
If you could get a cheap 1960A style cab you can get a real punchy and growly sound with the right PA speakers (I think his were JBLS in ~1000w range?). Bass cabs are usually super deep so fatter style guitar cabs will give you a bit more of the bassy thump. He had a deep guitar 2x12 that he cut about a 2" port along one of the longer sides of the baffle that just fucking punched. The grill cloth damn near popped off thing with the right notes. He ended up having to port it again to tone it down a bit.
Also, you might have to port the cab.

Re: Blog/tweet about shit in your life here
Actually, the cab in question would be half of a 70's beat to shit Ampeg 4x12, it's quite deep. Now that you've put it in my brain, I am definitely gonna look around for some PA speakers, especially with how stupid the power handling potential is.

Yeah and they can usually be had for cheap. At least around here, what with all the churches going out of business and such.

Re: Blog/tweet about shit in your life here
I think I've just come to realization that I don't like the sound of uncoated drum heads on toms for anything but particular sorts of metal.

Re: Blog/tweet about shit in your life here
I've used quite a few uncoated heads, Mostly Evans G2 stuff of a couple different varients (G2 Clear, Black Chrome, EC2S) and less Remo stuff, just an ebony Ambassador and Emperor. Coated heads, Remo Emperors and Evans Onyx (meh head for toms, very dampened, ROCKS SHIT on my ringy piccolo). I like the way that the Evans uncoated stuff sounds, quite bassy and really attacky (kind of the thing I don't like about uncoated heads given context tho) and I wasn't too partial to the Remo uncoated stuff. I feel like Emperors just kind of rock shit for what my ears want to hear for most kinds of rock music with my recordings thus far. I pretty much ubiquitously use my PR40s on toms, and they have so much fucking topend detail that the accentuated transient is almost detrimental to what I want to get out of a tom sound. Granted, I have heard these things on a few different drumsets (though with a good amount of continuity) and some of my perspective might be skewed by particularly good sounding combinations of drummer/drum/head. I don't know.

Re: Blog/tweet about shit in your life here
Right on. I haven't been too picky about my top heads in the past, only really making a requirement for real thin bottom heads. I will use pretty much whatever top heads are available. If i have to buy them, i tend to just go for ones that i know are cheap but will last a long time(Evans G2 has been a good one for me, they keep sounding consistent, if not amazing, even when they are really beat to shit old). I am too broke to really get much deeper into it or more picky than that. Lately though i have been thinking i want to set up two complete drumsets to have available though. One like mine is now, dual ply uncoated shit tuned all tight and crisp like a modern set, and then another single ply coated sort of set tuned a bit more thumpy and sixties like. I need a lot more money than i have or can expect to have though.

Re: Blog/tweet about shit in your life here
Just revised one of my statements, I meant to say uncoated in terms of their extra attackiness. I've not really messed with any single ply uncoated heads to my knowledge, I just avoid single plys in general for fear of breaking them after awhile.
