So, i finally did this:

Image

I was going to build one, but i don't have a slab of wood that is fucking huge enough. And they are so cheap right now.

Still going to build another offset, but now it won't be a jazzmaster. :eyebrows:

Every time I hold one of those fuckers I am indeed surprised by how giant the body is. Looks perfectly normal until you strap it up.

Feels almost normal while playing to me, but when i went to measure up a slab with a full-size plan, it was kind of nonsense-big. Basically the same size body as my jazz bass.

It is an interesting pace change too. 25.5" scale, but because of the way the body is skewed, it actually feels a bit like playing a baritone neck or something.

I can totally see why people put .11s on these things. It almost seems to demand it. Came strung with .09s, swapped them out for my normal .10s, but they still feel a little too thin in some ways.

Wacky bridge and trem design. Must have been drawn up around/for real heavy strings.

Still need to set the guitar up. I was surprised though; it is actually pretty close, and i was able to play it for several hours last night with only relatively slight and minor intonation annoyances.

Cheap guitars are so crazy/good right now.

Yarp, that big body with heavy strings with those fat coils gives it that beefy sound. And also yarp, the offset gives it the feeling of a longer scale neck, and seeing as my tele has just above a 26" scale length, you can probably imagine why I dig JMs.

Personally I don't touch the vintage/mastery/proper trems though. But I don't fuck with trems in any form, so that's just my bias. People will argue the janky trem and saddles are part of the charm and contribute to the signature sound of the JM, which may be true enough I suppose. Never stopped any of my JM's with TOM bridges sounding great though. Shit, the J. Mascis signature Squier is one of my favorite JMs to play, regardless of price. I often used it to demo pedals for customers at Sam Ash. Basically nails indie rock tones for days.

Oh, the proper jazzmaster saddles are trash and can fuck themselves, no doubt. I already have a set of the modified(height adjustable) mustang saddles on their way.

I like the goofball trem though. Just smoove enough, just sketchy enough. I don't like it quite as much as the Mosrite one my friend has, or maybe even as much as the Mustang flava(which is another real unique sort of oddball), but it is a solid third place for that subtle wiggly shit.

Having played a few Jazzmasters in the recent past, I totally get the Jazz Bass comparison re: the body. I felt the same thing as soon as I picked them up. I honestly never paid attention to the saddles, but looking at them... Yeah, a bit wonky. I was pleasantly surprised by the trems though. I like 'em. I've come to realize the only trems I truly dislike are Floyds. (I can't really speak for Kahlers; I've probably played... Two Kahler-equipped guitars ever, maybe, briefly in guitar stores.)

I've been kinda jonesing for the Squier Jazzmaster Baritone, ugly finish and all (kinda like it for some reason?) but have kept buying recording gear instead. :red:

That is truly a glorious type of ugly.

I would go Bass VI though, just for the classic bridge-ness of it. Same scale as the baritone, jaguar pickups instead of the jazzmaster ones though.

Got to love an offset! I didn't like how huge the body of my telemaster felt though so I was kinda glad to be rid of it. Just felt like an oversize clunky tele which I guess it was haha. I love my Jag bass though, real comfy. Any idea if Jag guitar bodies are the same size as that on the short scale Jag bass?

I actually dunno.

Oh, but here is one showing the bass vi with a normal jazzmaster:

No idea on the Jaguar, but i would have to assume that the bass would similarly have a bigger body than the guitar also.

My last performance with this band. I've left them and the slamz behind to grave within more melodic pastures.

Oh yeah? what's the new biz then?

Also, that is a very solid audio quality for videos of this type of stuff. What was the camera/mic? Usually it is impossible to tell what is going on with this stuff in live video form.

Post Re: Blog/tweet about shit in your life here
No new biz yet. I do have three other bands on the go still, but those are other instruments/roles. This was my guitar band, and this band is in need of new material now that our full length has been out for a year and a half. I've been unable to write new material that I find satisfactory, and have been hating learning other people's material. And attending rehearsal has been a drag. Basically my heart isn't in it anymore, so I had to leave. I think that's the best for everyone.

I actually on the Uber ride home from that show saw someone posting about a guitarist slot in a 'female fronted symphonic band'. So I threw my name in and we're going to jam sometime soon and see how she goes. Though all I have to go on concerning whether or not this other band is any good is a really low quality rehearsal recording, which sounds... okay. And the other bands these people are in don't seem very good, so I don't know if it will be anything. But it'd be nice if it is, I'd get to play and write music a lot more in the direction I've been wanting to head in.

There is a guy who's been recording the shows as of late. He puts a go pro on the ceiling (it's low) just ahead of the vocalist's monitor.

Best of luck to you Sir Geoff.

My debut is tomorrow night for the new band. First time in original music in a few years. Also first time in a few years I am the lead shredder. Seems there are so many guitarists here, and everyone is the lead player. I love playing rhythm to or sharing leads. gives me more time for stage fuckery. Alas, it was time to bring the shreds back out. Whole new wardrobe for said show including leather pants, goth jacket and stompy stompy boots.

I shall report back with my findings.

so the show was huge. We played with the band Killcode. They liked us a lot also so maybe we hook up for more gigs.

They did ask me and the little lady to attend a magazine debut in Manhattan, she didn't want to do. It was a red carpet type thing and she didn't want to get a dress, blah blah..

I had another band member go with me, it was very cool. made some contacts and maybe they will do a piece on my new band after the new year. We killed them with our look.

Nice tor, was it odd, or easy, to drop back into a lead guitar role after a long time not doing it live?

Have I mentioned what I think about running Pro Tools on Windows for anything resembling location recording? :dildo: :mexican: :poop: :eekass: :mob:  :deadhorse: :hitler: :ugeek:

Used Mac Pro tower with 2x Intel Xeon quad-cores is surprisingly cheap. Rolling rack. I already own Logic and an iLok if I need it for something. It will never, ever connect to the Intarwebs if I can help it. It will be a smart tape machine.

But I digress. :snax:
