The engineers that do their cheepo shit are fucking geniuses, straight up:

Granted, it is also more evidence that a nice cab+speaker setup is super important, but really, the amp is a massive part and this SS cheapo is surprisingly not deficient. Sound around the 3:45 mark is just plain good.

Also, this fucking guy's youtube channel is a fantastic resource and a very effective way to waste hours listening to old amps playing rock riffs.

Another Lead 12 one; i like the cab in the first one better for the amp tho, i think this one starts to show some more of the ss clipping edges in spots IMO:

Noted on the dude's Youtube channel. Re: the Lead 12, I've played a couple of 'em, and would have bought one were it not for the fact I can always find 'em cheaper on Ebay. And I'm lazy. Even the li'l combo sounds like a tiny 800. The characteristic Marshall tones are there.

Re: cab-and-speaker setup, we ran my Vox AC4C1-12 through Chris from Garda's Marshall 1982A loaded with Weber Alnico Blues and Silvers, and it was excellent. I keep meaning to replace the internal speaker with a proper Blue- I have one sitting in a styrofoam cooler in my basement in need of a re-cone- but haven't yet gotten around to it. Replacing the cheesy stock tubes with a Mullard RI 12ax7, JJ long-plate ECC803, and Mullard RI EL84 greatly improved the tone; the harshness disappeared. So yeah, tiny cheap amps through a proper cab are most definitely a viable thing.

Marshalls are amps I want to be fans of, but I sound fucking terrible playing through.

Kind of this. Vox/Matchless is more my flavor for my own playing, for sure, at least so far, but lately, i have just really been digging the sounds of (other people playing) old ass Marshalls, and a new one for me to be into: Oranges.

Enough so that i have decided to build a couple new maps and see if i can learn their ways, hence the fact that i have now watched quite a few hours of this guy's videos now, to get more of an idea of what circuits do what, and what direction i will start off in.

See Oranges are the flavor of british amps I can sound decent through, but I have found that is somehwat contingent on them running through Orange cabs.

Obviously the answer for my playing is "more gain."
