Geoff's bass build - The continuation
So I'm done finishing it. But waaiit! I don't have pictures of this for you, because suddenly my computer doesn't recognize my camera and won't access the closeup of this. But on the back of the neck, some of the finish has become all crackled. At some spots, even coming off in minuscule bits, revealing the wood beneath. This is no good. I don't know why it did this, but I suppose now I must do something about it.

That blows aboot the neck finish acting lame. You prepped with sanding, all that shizz? Did you use a sanding sealer? That silk looks fucking superduper though!

See the crackling? See that a few flakes of finish actually came off in that spot. It was sanded, yus. No sanding sealer though.

Whoah. That looks screwy. What is the finish? Was the bass exposed to drastic temperature changes somehow?
I often put clear straight over bare wood, and i have never had it do that before.
Wacky.

Re: Geoff's bass build - The continuation
Indeed, it has spent periods outside while the newer coats on the silk part dried. It's been like 14 C here. Temperature is a likely culprit. But damn, shouldn't this shit be resistant to that? I mean the bass is going to be in the cold at some point. This is Canada. I used this. Well it wasn't the 2x thickness version. It was the normaller kind. I can't find pics of it.

Hmm, i don't know that stuff. Is it enamel? Or poly? Or something else?
Also, the neck is the only part that cracked?

It... it... doesn't say...?
Only the neck. I used the same brand, but glossy type for the body.

Re: Geoff's bass build - The continuation
Hmm. Maybe, sand the beck down to the wood again, use a sanding sealer, and a compatible topcoat clear, but let it dry in controlled temperature environment. Or, finish it in the same gloss finish as what worked on the body, and bring it down to satin with superfine steel wool.

Argh. It's cold and wet. I fear I am too late.
