Speaking of Daath, this is the perfect metal video:

It's Sean Reinert plus the guitarists from Daath. :snax: We'll see how she is...

It's worth checking out. Kind of like Fredrik T's Special Defects in that in sort of plays out as an instrumental br00tz album that tells some sort of musical story (while not having any obvious story)... Not that it's that much like it, but it's that sort of thing. It's cool.

He is a sad man king.

A fine record of the sounds of things falling apart.

So good loud.

I have never really given it the time/context it deserves (that context being laying in bed with the lights completely off, while possibly messed up :red:) but it seems like I would like it.
I have it, I just never listen to it.

That actually is the context to experience it in. Lights off, headphones, and cranked way-the-fuck-up.

That's how I heard Floodland for the first time, hundreds of miles from home and missing someone very dear roughly during the Pleistocene era, seeing as I was younger than you at the time.

Also, I remember from my cassette version of Disintegration it saying something like "this record was made to be played loud, so turn it up!" in the liner notes.

Also II: we had it (disintegration) blasting through the PA earlier at Snaxodrome II/Garda HQ whilst setting up a dedicated 'puter for sequencing/video/light control live.

Also III: I miss my Disintegration t-shirt. Not that I wear band shirts much, but I had some cool ones. My one ex kinda boosted them all.

I try to give every "deep" or complex album that listening opportunity.
It enhances the experience and may make me comprehend things the artist was trying to get through that I wouldn't notice with a sober perspective.
:idk:

I am totally that guy that only wears band merchandise other than my Levi's.
:red:

I even have an Ion Dissonance and a Despised Icon hat.
French-Canadian DM FTW.

I really like Gorguts' Obscura, and I don't listen to that much metal. :D What I do listen to is usually pretty nuts though! When Luc Lemay whips out the viola on that one track... That is shit-hot.

And that's not a bad way to experience things. I've gotten things out of bad, if well-intentioned albums that way. That is the only way I will listen to St. Anger. It makes more sense somehow that way. It's still not good, but I get it as a failed attempt at something.

That makes me want to listen to Floodland again. Or Panopticon. It is that time of year I should start breaking those records out. They sound like winter.

I do occasionally wear my TSOM and Opeth shirts in public. I'd probably rock my Amorphis, Bauhaus, Moonspell and Skinny Puppy ones sometimes if I still had them. I'm generally on the somewhat-overly-dressed-up side though.

It works, I think, because of how it makes you focus on the music by turning off the rest of your brain besides what you're paying attention to.

Random fact: when I'm working on a serious mix, I go out and get a bottle of Riesling and generally quaff the whole thing in the process. It makes me ignore the technical. I'm usually all coffee'd up doing the rough mix and shithammered doing the final and somehow it works out. One makes me focus intently on the technical and the other makes me want to shake my booty and Art (art being a verb here).

Ah, yes.
The viola is on Earthly Love, that is one of my favorite moments on that album.

Sometimes I think I might dress too casual, maybe I could attract some bitches with a little bit of fancy flare.
I'm just like; blues jeans and death metal tee/jacket pretty much everyday.
But that's just kinda me.

Also, I am incapable of figuring out if Barnes growls or gurgles...

Best thing about Earthly Love, is how they manage to make those pretty violins and voices... not sound pretty. Without actually breaking them.

Obscura is, IMO, the finest metal record that is currently available to mankind.

The production on all of Obscura is something of a modern marvel.
Everything is 100% clear.
Those cymbals should be drowned in all the dissonance but they ring loud and beautifully.

I would love to hear what Luc could do with an 8-string..

I really want to hear someone with an 8-string not play djent or shred. I want to hear it in the hands of a creative, experimental player so so bad.

Fuck me, it's a guitar and bass in one instrument. I've said this so many times... someone needs to use it as such.
