Re: GARDA- Graphite: rough mix w/ vocals, better live drums.
Oh yeah, the vocals are totally halfassed-raw on this version, really only on there for reference. I fixed 'em up but good last night. The posted mix, there's just compression and the obvious effect tracks (megaphone, Buffer Override). The snare... is what it is, and nothing short of severe EQ (I tried this, decided against it) or sample replacement will make it anything else. That's just how that snare sounds. It's physically very large and tuned to sound like that. He wants the thing to sound like an old drum machine.

Hotness. Sidechaining is my friend. Also, I did re-EQ the snare a bit.

Yes, I thought you might have... trimmed some of the fat, so to speak. It sounds 'neater' to me...

 Re: GARDA- Graphite: better mix.
Indeed, snares are not teh bass instrument. It is kind of cool when they sport some low mid kick though. I managed to pull that off with my Vesication drum recordings... too bad my overheads sound claustrophobic (why was I so lazy that I didn't move the drums from the corner of the room where I practice?)...

 Re: GARDA- Graphite: better mix.
The room: it matters. The low mid snare thing works nicely assuming it fits in the mix that way. There's a buncha low midshit going on here, and that coupled with the deep snare... does not work so well. For some of the stuff we recorded, it works out nicely though. I'll be getting to that soon. I did a tiny bit of EQing when I halfassmastered the thing, too, to get rid of some low mid murk. Like -2db @ 200hz across the whole mix, really simple. BTW, this mix was deemed releasable.
