Nah, man. By the time Fender started royally fucking shit up in the 60's and 70's Leo's involvement was minimal, the company had been bought out by CBS in '64. And then that bad motherfucker started up G&L with George Fullerton (one of the head honchos at Fender during it's early years) and made some supersweet guitars.

Re: When I saw you, banner ad, sitting at the bottom of the
Fender has had it's abortions.
But Gibson is in a league of it's own.
The thing is, even when Fender makes a shitty guitar, they still rarely break $1500 (outside of signature and CS designs). When Gibson makes a shitty guitar, they charge more for it then their Standard line.
But the standards are the sought after models ...
It's like, Gibson CEOs just hate the fact that the original designs are popular. In their jealous rage they try to create abominations from them. They even drop the quality in the Standard lines to try and persuade players to get the higher end models.
But still, nobody buys them.

As much as I like Gibson-y stuff, I can safely say I will probably never buy a Gibson guitar unless it's something awesome and used. There's so many other great options.

All my guitars and basses are used, I'm about 50/50, 3 Gibsons (2 lps & 339) 4 Fenders (2 Strats, 2 Teles) 1 Reverend, 1 Ibby. I love the durability of the Fenders, but I recorded today, and I usually use my Tele Deluxe with this band, but I used the 2007 LP because it is a tone monster.

I want something else humbucker-y.. All I have at the moment is my Schecter Tempest (pretty goddamn decent, but pretty funny looking) guitar. It'll do for now, but I do want something else.. It's funny, my Mustang has some Dimarzio humbucker in the bridge, but sounds like a single coil. It's all twang and snap. HOWEVER, when I select both the bridge and neck pickup I get the biggest goddamn wrung out power chords you've ever heard.

Even the bastard oddball Fenders are still kinda cool. And then there's Musicman and G&L. So, no. And yes, this is an instant classic thread.

I really wish I could animate.
This would really be a lot better as an animated piece.
I like drawing things being thrown though.

The last frame was removed by the host. I would bookmark this and use it every time discussion of Gibson arises on other forums.

Re: When I saw you, banner ad, sitting at the bottom of the
That is unfortunate. I noticed that too. Surely there is another less "PC" hosting service? For the record, the recent high-end Gibsons I've spent time with- '08 and later- are as fine playing an instrument as can be desired... for the most part. My metalband's guitarist's Shred-X Explorer- this is a custom shop piece, mind you, limited edition, like $3k guitar new ('bout half that used, or less if yr smrt)- has, of all things, a fucked-up output jack. He swapped out the pickups for Blackouts (Major improvement over the EMGs! Seriously, his toan has never been better, and I've known him for years) and I wish he'd dumped the damn jack too. His old Explorer is a rude piece of work with a fucked-up truss rod that needed replacement. It's more-or-less not at all Gibson at this point, as he replaced the truss rod and fingerboard (fretted it himself) and all the electronics. The LPs I've played have been much nicer than they were in the early 2000s, but I haven't bought or gigged or recorded the things, so... I thought my old Eclipse was a nicer guitar than the current run of LPs at the time I got it. I played about a dozen of the things to be sure, and they were... put together kinda shitty, it felt like, not so solid, fretwork was bad, setup was bad. Yeah, they did the LP thing- big bassy chunky whatnot, and they looked lovely, but they didn't play like they looked. The more recent ones (I would love a platinum finish no-inlays LP, and the last one I played made me very desirous of such!) are a serious improvement... but I suspect that's reaction to everyone bitching how they've been lately. They did not, for quite some time, feel like their price. Fender, however, has kept getting better. The MIMs and Squiers and Asian-made Fenders are, for the most part, nice guitars these days. Certainly better than they used to be, feel- and tone-wise. The Tele I've been using on the Garda stuff when I want a Tele sound is a MIM; our bassist went through every Tele in GC (he's not a bad guitarist himself; he has a nice Taylor and Takamine and an LP too and can- and does- play them; I've no problem playing his riffs. They're cool and sound like mine 'cause he likes Olde Goth Shitte and dark singer/songwriters and plays like it) and picked that one. Frankly I like its bridge pickup better than my Strat for Rawk Riffing. Even with a nice Dimarzio in there, the Strat bridge just doesn't have the same... je ne sais quoi as the Tele bridge. Teles and Les Pauls have the best of all possible bridge pickup toans. Unless you want a quirky sound for a specific reason, there's no reason to be on the bridge pickup save for dirty riffing. (Or soloing, when appropriate. Or want Tele Twang for That Sound.) Ever. And those are the best devices for that porpoise. All Other Positions are superior for clean sounds, and the Strat and Les Paul neck pickup toens are only maybe the two best solo tones ever if you want to be gentle about the whole soloing thing and aren't solely looking for facemelting shreddz. Yeah, I'm drunk. I don't have to be up 'til 10:30. I am rambling. So what?
