I love Cynic, and Focus is one of my favorite albums of all time.
Yet, as much as I try I can't get into Traced In Air...
I am sitting here trying to see if I just missed something the first 20 times around, but it's still boring as fuck.
The production is fucking weaksauce bullshit.
The songwriting is fucking lame as hell, there are far less growls on this (For old school DM vocals, Tony Teegarden on the original is easily my favorite, better than Chuck Schuldiner by far, IMO).
Bass playing isn't as audible or rapeshit.
I miss the old vocoder sound.

I am pissed.

I love the production on Traced. Drums sounds super orgasmic. Tones are niceynice. Songs are okay... I'd like if they had a bit more balls, but whatever. I give it one thumb up.

Focus is good-ish, but really, i think that they meant to make Traced In Air back then, and Focus was the compromise.

It is still pretty sweet, because, as i have said before, i feel like they have/had something interesting to bring to brutesy music.

I do *not* however, feel that they have anything interesting to bring to shitballs new age pseudo kennyGjazz sissypop.

Focus IMO is geniosity, through and through.

I love the jazz parts on Focus.

Listen to Uroboric Forms on whatever music playing website it is that you use.
And then listen to Textures.
Uroboric Forms represents the brutesy side of the album bast, and Textures covers the fretless bass jazzy awesomness rapeshit side.

Focus, IMO, is about as far as they should have gone with that. Even still, they couldn't resist delving into cheezejazz in spots on that one.

The universe does not need any more shit new age pseudojazz.

The universe could however, make use of some interesting creative metal bands. They were treading a fine line... and then they fell in.

I think the problem is that I listen to absolutely NO jazz outside of the kind that comes with prog metal, so I am not as picky.
I know that you are a fan of traditional jazz and listen to a lot of it, which is why it might bother you and not I.

The interlude on veil of maya is fucking amazing. that whole album makes me hard. traced in air is pussy "oh look how intelligent and jazzy i am. i'm so new age!!!!." is it just me or is paul masdival kind of a washed up faggot now? hes a kickass player, but this "buddihst" spirtual, meditation bullshit he rambles on is getting old.
