Re: Blog/tweet about shit in your life here
oops, forgot to divide by root 2 so its closer to 220 mA which still aint bad for an £18 transformer!

Re: Blog/tweet about shit in your life here
Interesting shit. Imma have to read some more about it. Around here. An equivalent 450v@220mA EI would cost between double that, to about maybe a little more than double that. The difference would be that the EI would also have 6.3v and probably 5v windings innit. And you could flip the amp over without a cradle. Hmm. Well it is only a matter of time before vendors around here start sourcing them, and the option to run the experiment becomes more of a reality here. I do still wonder, that if there is no big catch/caveat here: why the super lowbudget chinese stuff is still either using HV toroids, or standard oldschool iron. In the field of cutting corners for lowest possible pricing, that would seem to be pretty low hanging fruit...

Re: Blog/tweet about shit in your life here
Yeah the lack of a heater winding is a bit of a kicker but a small and cheap toroid can give a good rock solid DC without much fucking about so it opens up other options. I'm mainly interested in high gain amps anyway so I'd probably end up buying a transformer for running DC heaters anyway. I suspect its because they are simply copying whats gone before them, much as anyone does I suppose. Look at the bugera 5150 clone which has cable wrapping arms on the back despite being fitted with an IEC cable The advent of cheap low volt, high current toroids is fairly recent so I guess people just havent moved with the times. They're certainly easier and cheaper to make than EI iron and they are less noisy too so they're better in a lot of respects. I'll certainly consider adopting them if they work out for what I want to do, especially since a JCM800 type EI will cost £80-90 before shipping!

Re: Blog/tweet about shit in your life here
Was gonna make a seperate thread about this but as we currently have a load of mapz/electronics talk.. how risky would it be to replace the fx loop pot in my GH50L? I'm alright at soldering but scared of the high currents that can be stored in a map. Is it best to take it to a tech to avoid premature death? Pretty sure it needs replacing, I get random volume fluctuations either with general playing, or if I nudge it.

Re: Blog/tweet about shit in your life here
Try the easiest thing first yo. Get can of DeoxIT (local electronics supply should have it, around here Radioshack does) and following its instructions, clean out the pot (basically you just spray the shit into the back of the pot) and FX loop jacks. Hopefully that is all the thing will need.

Re: Blog/tweet about shit in your life here
I have a feeling I may have tried that already. I have servisol electrical contact solvent cleaner type stuff I never know where to spray that stuff though, do you do it around the pot shaft or just every-fucking-where you can (and that's what she said )?

Re: Blog/tweet about shit in your life here
Ideally, you would want to (turn off and unplug and) open up the map and get the contact cleaner into the opening in the back of the pot. You don't need to drown the thing, just give it a couple blasts while turning the pot back and forth between its extremes. Same deal with the jacks, just a bit of a blast, then insert a plug a couple times. I mean, it is possible that the pot is toast, but it is more common for them to just be a bit (or a bunch) oxidized.

Re: Blog/tweet about shit in your life here
fuck I need coffee. I have a headache (all day) I took my daughter ice skating today, which that bonding thing can be really cool, and I love skating (used to play hockey) If I don't get rid of this headache I will kill someone.

Caffeine is the solution, but that may be the caffeine talking.

Yeah, it's usually better to drink water after you exercise than something that will make you piss out your remaining water...

I was going to attempt to maybe make some interesting post while intoxicated, but the room started to spin too fast. Almost like it is right now.
