Ya, the second was a disappointment. First album was godly, and the third seems pretty epic so far.

What kind of sounds does this one bring to the table?

In lou that I'll never experience the awesomeness that is Sleepytime Gorilla Museum live, i'll have to do the second best thing.

I think I'm going to download one of these bizarre looking albums you bastards are always swapping between each other.
I definitely was rewarded with Books Of Horizons, so why not.

Anything specific I should check out that comes to mind, gentlemen?

If you like SC3, you may want to give Estradasphere a shot. Check out Palace of Mirrors.

It is like hip hop, but as if with My Bloody Valentine and Faust as the backing band. Incredibly oppressively noisey sounds.

Like... this:

They were fucking awesome live too.

If you dig hip hop, or like, oppressive noise, maybe give it a spin. The record, taken in as a whole, is way up on my list of finest/favourite sounds.

Kind of reminds me of a riffier, less proggy Dimensions Divide...

Some acquaintances were having a discussion about some Katy Perry - Kanye collab song. I gave it a couple seconds listen. Suffice to say my ears were in need of a thorough cleansing after.

Shuffling these two:

And kind of realizing that a lot of the aspects of them are things that i consider to be recording/production ideals.

I think Todge mentioned something to that effect a while back regarding the drums on 13 Songs(IIRC), but kind of across the board, i just like the way these records sound. They sound good... but not TOO good. It is a fine and difficult balance.

I like the production on all of Fugazi to be honest. It sounds like a real band rather than overprocessed shite :tu:

Yeah, even when it has like obviously two drummers overdubbed onto it or when they do like seven takes in a row of like guitar slides. Somehow when it all plays back, it just sounds like doods in a room playing sweet rock.

It is weird, because lately i have been going back and trying to determine what exactly it is that i hold as production ideals.

It is definitely NOT Steve Albini. Even though he has recorded so many of my favorite records. He imparts a sonic stamp on bands that is as obvious as a gated eighties rock snare, IMO. It sounds like So-And-So As Recorded By STEVE ALBINI.

It might be someone like Bob Weston. He gets continually excellent results for great bands, in which few elements of the recordings bear HIS stamp, but which all generally bear some sort of uniquely cool sonic marks. Which is, IMO an important thing for any recording to have. Beyond the music, it should just SOUND cool.

But really across the board, the way the Don Zientara stuff sounds, is just that: unique enough, clear enough, but not cramming the musicians into some specific "sound". While i like elements of Bob Weston records (the bass consistently sounds amazing on his stuff), i like pretty much the whole inclusive vibe of the Fugazi records. Drums, guitars, vocals, bass. They are all treated in such a fashion that it just "sounds right" to me.

For me that might be Brendan O'Brien... but then maybe his recordings still are a bit 'perfect'. Just, not fakey, like a lot of other stuff. Quality sounds.

I'll go out on a limb and say that neurosis - the eye of every storm is probably the best production of anything ever. It sounds real and its how they sound live.

I don't really have a favourite producer, I never really look into who produces the albums I like the sound of for some reason. Another bands production I really like the sound of is Touche Amore.

I think the deciding factor for me is how the drum kit sounds. If it doesn't sound real it loses its impact to me. It's probably why I never like the sound of my own stuff as much :red:

Anyway I'm now listening to this. Suffice to say, it's pretty dirty :tu: I really want to see em live, I have a feeling it would be awesome.

While Gutter Phenomenon is not my favorite ETID record, it definitely has some of my favorite ETID songs on it.
Pretty Dirty and Champing At The Bit are definitely somewhere in my top 5.

I just wish the production of the album was less wearing on one's ears..
