MOD POWERS FAIL! I edited Devin's post.

Thusly:

I just abuse the ones at work when I need something printed. It's easier that way. It makes me think, in retrospect, when I went back to school some years back that I should have taken advantage of this and printed out papers on really weird shit, like backlit film. It probably wouldn't have gone over very well, though. Which is just as well as I never finished my history degree anyhow and still work as graphicartsbitch.

Does it make me even more of a hipster that I don't own a television anymore either? (And I'm wearing skinny jeans, to boot!)

Mr. tor, plenty of pictures will be taken. My bassist took a bunch last time, but BELT only knows what happened to them. :red:

Also, Chris: you're ditching the EQ and effects section?

Aye, i never use them at all. Closest i will get to missing any of the rest of the mixer parts, will be some of the i/o shit like the Aux sends, which i have found helpful for giving a quick and dirty headphone mix to a drummer who is playing along with a live guitar scratch. That is what i did with my friend's punk band and it was a stupidly simple/effective way just to send the guitar and nothing else.

I don't use the fx for recording stuff. If i wanted to buy another power supply board from the parts place(about $70) i could probably re-assemble the thing just as an analog mixer, with the digital fx and stuff intact, just with the firewire removed. I might do that, actually, at some point. I liked a couple of the reverbs, but i have VSTs that work fine for me, and i never 'print' fx other than dirt when tracking.

The EQ section, i just never used. Again, i have VSTs that i find more flexible/intuitive, in this case, because i know exactly what and where is being jiggered. I don't know what frequencies the hi/lo/mid are tuned to, or how much cut/boost they give. It might say it in the manual, but i wouldn't be surprised on this type of consumer level gear if it didn't.

But yeah, what i realllly need, is a minimum of twelve XLRs with at least 4-5 with +48v available for them. Just a level knob, maybe a clip LED. And then a minimum of those twelve sent individually over the firewire connection. Dead fucking simple. Everything else, i have been doing and can continue to do within the realm of software.

Just seems like it would be an interesting, not too difficult (AND CHEAP!) way to solve my bigger problem right now, which is: i just need another (minimum) two or three channels.

Also, i did some looking and the A/D converters are not that bad really. They are the same ones they used in the ADAT HD24, and the same ones that Behringer uses in their geek-approved ADA8000 converter. Not the best, but also, not necessarily the weak link in the Multimix's sound quality. Simply cutting out the preamps and replacing them with solid transparent nicer ones, i think can be expected to make a nice solid difference.

Now i just have to figure how i can work it all out for hobocash. :red:

That A/D converter section has a good reputation. I mean, it's not Millennia or Benchmark or Crane Song or some shit, but it's also not $3k. One of those "best in class" sorta deals, or so I gather. I've heard the HD24 recommended simply for the 24 channels of A/D conversion alone.

And having a small-format mixer kicking about doesn't hurt.

I'm curious to see what the re-housed 16 channel inyourface winds up looking like. And yes, massive geek points because you built your own fucking interface.

I got an ART passive DI box today. Boring gear purchase. But it's so pretty and built like a brick. No more using a Boss pedal to send the clean to my interface and also the amp.

I'm going to order one of those as well so I can reamp my stuff. That way I can crank my amps for one-shot recordings, instead of trying to track at full volume and pissing my neighbors off.

Indeed, a fine use.

I also am looking forward to having my practice amp as a monitor when I record direct into the comp... or recording miced and then doing impulses to the bare signal for a combined tone.

That was my intent. Especially with my supah-fuzz toanes. I can get the big massive wall of fuzz, and combine that with a straight forward heavy distorted toan to help keep it articulate.

It just occurred to me that there is probably some info flashed into the firmware that tells the computer what model it is. I wonder how difficult it is going to be to fool the computer into thinking it is the Multimix16 is has hooked up to it. Hmmm.

Hopefully the driver is simpler than all that, but i suspect that i might have trouble getting the extra channels to show up...

I still intend to fucking try though!

I didn't get much out of being Captain Less-Than-Ethical. In short, it made me feel like a piece of shit. That was a long time ago.

In the old days though, i also found that all of the interesting ones had boyfriends. After a few years of it, i decided that it was probably a mental problem of my own, messing up where i was looking and what for.

As for what it is for you, who knows. The Most Interesting Ones are generally relationship magnetic though. Or rather, they tend to find themselves pursued, greatly increasing the likelihood that if not now then soon, there will be a boyfriend. It is just straight up logic. But the fact is, that some doods, make their whole purpose, that of pursuit. And other doods, don't. The Other Doods don't have a ton of options... either pick up the habit of pursuit, get a bit unethical, or stay lonely.

Oh. And if it is (somehow) not yet readily apparent, i am a complete ray of sunshine when it comes to the subject of relationships.

Currently the ethics comity and tactical operations are having a protracted meeting which is doing nothing for the manuscript i'm working on

In some respects this has come about because this is the first chick I've spoken to in a long time who is genuinely interesting. She probably isnt interesting to a lot of people, she's a fellow PhD. and ferociously intelligent, hell the opening gambit ended up in discourse about statistics (the oddest game hand i've ever played btw). Normally I'd be like meh, too much effort and move to the next target but there is more to this one. But hey, she gave me her number and I'm going for a toot at hers sometime at her behest. Roll the dice and hope for a double as they say.
