TELL HIM HE WILL TAKE HIS MIX AND LIKE IT.

And then replace it with SD2 just to fuck with him.

You should totally make a custom kit in SD2 that uses... samples from his drums, recorded in the Awesome Vault. :huzzah:

I'm learning Hope Leaves by Opeth at the moment. It's not as hard as I anticipated, but it's going to require some practice. That 1-5 stretch doesn't hurt, but I'll be damned if it's not hard to nail and not fuck up the notes on the 5th fret.

I kinda thought that was the idea myself. :idk: It's specifically supposed to sound "like an '80s drum machine" and does exactly that. :? And texturally I like the contrast, even if it is a bit of a bear to fit into a dense mix. Regardless, we have a tracking session booked after the next round of shows for something I was asked last night "why isn't that the single?" (my answer being it was written after other tracks were already recorded!) and if nothing else the live room there should yield an improvement in clarity. It's a revelatory room, seriously, it is awesome. No boom, no washy harsh cymbals, just awesome. It flatters the hell out of snares, and IMO the snare is a drummer's signature sound.

Said song needs a tighter, drier drum sound anyway.

That being said, if my band's record's drum sounds are the bastard child of Sisters Of Mercy's Floodland and Metallica's Load I wouldn't complain. Not that I'm there yet, but I wouldn't mind being! Those are some damn good bigdrum sounds.

I based my songwriting kit preset in SD2 on his kit, down to the tambourine and woodblock. Similar sounding drums and cymbals positioned appropriately. At least I could do the thing justice. I would not mind having a sample set of that kit, especially once I get a few better mics.

I'm thinking I'll try and pick up a 414 in the near future as they're available fairly cheep, like five bills used, they devalue a lot for studio gear, and are totally fine mics to have in one's collection. I don't like 421s on guitars, but as a tom mic they'd be nice too.

What do 441s go for? Those fuckers look interesting as hell to me.

Snaxie, I'm going to have you record my drums for my band's full length in that room. I'll crash on the couch, and we will drink a lot. Just don't judge me on how much editing the kicks get... :red:

I am okay with this. I'm moving to a bigger place at the end of the month; I might even have room to entertain guests. This sounds like as fine an idea as any. Plus I bring in a quality metal drummer (who is the guitarist in the metal band I bass in) to assist on drum sessions. If you're feeling really adventurous, there's always analog tape.

I have some sessions for my metal band's EP coming up, incidentally, but we're kinda on hiatus as our drummer now works 3rd shift and just broke up with his girlfriend of many years, so he's in the process of getting his shit together at the moment. Which is a bit frustrating, but it's just as well as I've been obscenely busy with Garda.

I was kind of half kidding, but that would be stupendously awesome. If we do this I'd better practice my bits off. Especially if tape is involved.

They are a bit pricier than 421s, but bigger and shinier. My experience with them is very limited- Shiva/V30s, and I wound up killing 6khz with fire. But I did not choose them nor place them nor was I familiar with the monitoring (I think JBL LSRs?) so it was what it was. Stevie Nicks' vocal mic of choice, IIRC.

I would seriously be down for this and would do it for free. I'd just have to make sure I wasn't gigging on dates that overlapped.

It all goes into the computer to edit and mix anyhow. But I do have a tape machine if you'd want to use it. It embiggens (this is a perfectly cromulent word) drums.

Aye, albini uses them on vox too. Lots of folks run them on snares as well.

It is another one with the swiss army filterswitches:

Also it looks funky as hell, in a purely aesthetic sense.

I am very interested in those for some reason, and also the EV RE20. They both show up fucking everywhere when engineers start listing what was used.

Gadamn i wish mics were less expensive!

Great for clean/aggressive singing vocals, I bet.

Basically, you could use those switches to make whatever sound like it was being played through a clock radio with an EV horn loaded compression driver connected to it. That'd be cool for FX of some sort.

Kind of like I used to mic things up with a $5 Sony karaoke mic to make guitars sound super stifled and muffled.

Yeah, whoever put it on a V30 cab with the high end boost switched in was probably on drugs.

Or didn't know what the switch did. :red:

:idk: I guess they're thinner than usual as it's a "sporting" model :red: I also had 3 people in the back of the car, I guess the extra weight didn't help.
