Springs are a little weird on drums. The transients make them crash and bounce a bit, and sound really boingy.

The plate style is much more controlled and "reverby" for that sort of instrument.

I can't find a single metric ruler around here to measure one of those things with, though I did get my hands on a scratched one. All I have are printer's rulers with points and picas and weird fractional shit on them. It's thinner than I thought. Though much smaller than an EMT plate- the EMT 140 at GCR is gigantor. It's in a storage area because that's the only place big enough to put it that's out of the way of acoustic interference. (It is patched in to the A room.)

I wouldn't mind having an old Yamaha SPX90 kicking around for 'verb either. You've heard the nonlinear 'verb on a lot of things over the years, and they are stupid cheap now.

The smaller the plate, the thinner it should be(and the smaller the driver and pickups would need to be). It makes some sense that you could scale it down for a similar effect.

The main thing would be if it was smaller, and thicker, it probably could not have a proper frequency response. Might still sound cool though, as a "flavour" effect.

Actually, that is pretty much what i was doing back when i was close mic'ing my washing machine.

I have actually heard a few DIY plate verbs made with smaller thicker plates and they generally have a strange ringy resonance to them, kind of like some of the wierder "effect" reverbs that you find in digitalverb presets. Like the "Tube" setting or whatever.

But, yeah, after thinking about it some, probably taking a cutting torch a discarded refrigerator would yield a sufficiently sized/thicknessed sheet i think.

Yep, I hate normal gyms so I never tried it before, but my mates are into it and have a decent weight rack in one of their garages, so I'm using that rather than being stuck in a gym full of bro's buffing their guns
