The best advice was to look up indie hipster bands, who are notorious for their use of dance beats.

If you're struggling to write a certain type of music then perhaps it's not the kind of music you should be trying to play I would love to be able to play ridiculous chaotic sounding dissonant stuff but I just can't do it, all I'm good for is generic pop rock fodder with the occasional good riff

Honestly, I've never had to struggle to write in a certain genre. I write what I write, and if it ends up being pop or explosions then that is what it is.

I felt them a serious omission. I'm down with everything else you posted. I won't bother mentioning Depeche Mode, Goldfrapp or She Wants Revenge, because those are really electronic bands that happen to write rock songs with synthesizers.

It's all in the rhythm section. Feel and groove. Legitimate advice from someone who plays and writes danceable rock music. What you decided to guitar (this a verb because I said so) over the top is largely irrelephant. For example, my band has a new song we've played at our last couple shows and got a really good response to where I'm playing some sort of surf-meets-Spaghetti Western hybrid over... what's essentially very simple minor-key funk.

Irrelephant = my new band name.
