That saturated limiter looks real fun! I'd like to try it on the session I'm currently doing. On the snare.

Might not work out so hot though since the snare is also a major source of cymbal. Chalk it up to weak technique. It's the 'disappearing snare blast'.

What type of snare mic?

Have you experimented with sound deadening gobos to seal up the snare mic yet? Can be anything as simple as a small square of deadening material in between the mic and the hi-hat, up to something ridiculous like the huge red bucket that kurt ballou uses sometimes to enclose the whole hi-hat.

If set up right, it can make a huge difference in how much snare vs cymbal you get there, which can really open up the door for some really heavy snare compressing, without showing the swooshswoosh artifacts of overcompressed cymbals. :idk:

Have you tried moving the hats up higher? Yes, it's a pain in the dick to adjust (even I know this) but the results as far as snare micing goes are worth it.

On a related note: I have a bunch of roughly 6" squares of inch-thick hideous yellow foam I boosted from work when they were being thrown out. If anyone (Chris, Geoff?) wants a couple to make a snare gobo out of, I will mail them to you.

Avantone ADM above, Audix i5 below...

No gobos have been employed. Looking back that might have been a good idea, but it's too late for that now or else I'll have inconsistent drums sounds from song to song. :wall:

Interestingly, it's not just the hats but also the ride, china, kick, basically everything. I mean he is just tickling the snare drum at parts so it is mighty compressed, and everything else is coming through too.

Edit: I'm thinking when all the editing is done I'll try using an expander, and automate it to not turn on during the snare tickler parts (since that would remove the tickling of that snare)

Hazlitt White Cat. It's a local sweet white. It's like whitegrape boozecandy. The pizza was plain cheese, nothing fancy. I threw some spices on it.

As of right now, I'm up way too early for a Saturday, doing the math for acoustics in my home studio/living room. It's 13 2/3 x 28 x 9, all hardwood and whatnot. Pretty nice. Not entirely symmetrical; the corners are mostly angled, there's lovely exposed thick beams in the ceiling and there's a slight bit of dividing "wall" not-quite-centered. Going the short way on "my" side (the other side containing a couch, a chair, a bookshelf, a small TV, some game systems and a lot of plants.) I apparently pretty well set everything up by eye and nailed it. Going the long way would be ideal acoustically and I'd still be occupying the same amount of space, but it would be ugly at best without a console, or at least some more furniture. I'll probably leave it for now 'til I have more shit, build some diffusers for the back and sides, maybe throw something on the ceiling above my listeningspot, get a spiffy looking area rug and call it a day.

Now WTF do I do with the rest of my time? :?

:tu: I'm hoping the story will be the same for me tomorrow. Also I'm getting a bit concerned about how much I like smoking when I'm drinking :red: It enhances my night somehow.

Post Re: Blog/tweet about shit in your life here
I played some cool Fenders at the guitar store near my house today whilst going to pick up a new slide. There was a... I think '90s MIJ 5-string with passive Jazz pickups that was really nice. I didn't care for the amp I played it through, a little Hartke combo. Too dark. Might be the pickups, but it sounded clear at least, even the low B. Played really well, great build, resonant body. That and an oddball MIM Tele- it could have been a Partscaster, but the store dood said it was stock? Silverburst finish, maple neck/board, reversed control layout- I found myself reaching for a pickup selector that wasn't there- and some crazy pot taper values like the tone pot I had in my old Eclipse. Really smooth, and were totally nuts in what they did. Played and sounded fantastic. Probably could snag both for $700 out the door no questions. :?

You should probably have some more wine and go about acquiring those, Snaxie.

It did occur to me. As did needing a more reliable live amp (read: Shiva) and monitaurs on which to mix the record, and that I'm paying for studio time somewhere nice (I won't pay for anything I can do better myself re: that) this coming week... I could buy a lot more gear if I didn't like my creature comforts, living in a nice neighborhood, and was willing to subsist on ramen and Natty Ice. But I am too old for that shit. I certainly do like punching myself in the bank account as of late, though. And I am okay with this.

Love that special. Are you gettingit at a good price>
@Metal - I had a Melody Maker, those are very loud acoustically. I was shocked. I sold it for more than I paid so I did. I will purchase another :nods:

also; any thing with sparkles is better than anything without

I'm trying to snag the special for ~$500 unless I can throw in some trade bait, which right now seems unlikely.

It is refinished, but it looks like they did a pretty slick job.
