The cymbals are making some weird fluttery noises at the start... like the left crash thing during the start? Generally not feeling the drums much, but then that's because I've listened to the original ones so many times, which basically has my ideal death metal drum production.

Guitars sound fucking awesome though.

Yeah, I'm compressing the drum bus pretty hard. The snare on that record is hard to mimic because of Martin's maple snare tuned really high... there's no samples floating around of a snare sounding like that. The toms are just compressed to shit. The kick is the Sneap kick with MaxxBass added.


Guitars are 2 tracks of Stereo Chorus and 2 tracks of LeCto.

Bass is Trilian (YAY!) through GR4 then slammed with a limiter.

I like the guitar sound better your way, with the extra mids.

But i wouldn't know that unless i had listened to the records in the first place.

Seriously though, i would probably hate them a lot less if there was no singing.

Also, they seem to like to go into major chord sorts of territory in places where i wish they wouldn't.

Not to mention that so many of their songs are simply way too fucking long.

You listed all their high points as far as I go. They do shit nobody else really does, and do it well.

As far as major chordy def metal, have you ever heard Lykathea Aflame? That was one that Thinkpad20 suggested to me a while back. I wasn't into it, but you might dig it for its atypical sound in that aspect.

It is all fucked up, with all these major chords and melodies, and then these bizarre(played against the other bits) like middle eastern sorts of melodies completely randomly strewn throughout. If you haven't heard it, it is at least worth checking out for its strangeness.

That sounds like something I'd like. I shall check it out.

I agree with Chris's take on the more mids. The rhythm tone on that record is odd for Mikael (did Peter ever do any rhythm work on record when he was in that band or was he strictly solos and textural stuff?) -it's way more scooped than he usually rolls. I suspect that was a "vibe" thing; it's atypical for him and the overall sound of the mix is atypical for Sneap- dark, not a lot of "airy" high end, gritty, almost lo-fi. And yeah, it's an oddball snare sound. I forget what Mr. Sneap had to say on the subject of the drums on that record; it's been years.

I'm kinda chuckling re: Chris's major key comment, 'cause that bit just came up.

By the way, that was as scoopy as I could stand the tone in the mix.

Deliverance was Opeth's heaviest album so I can kind of understand the scooped out route.



Sneap said IIRC that the snare was 50% sample, the kick was 100% sample (due to there not being a mic on the kick) and the rest of the drums were natural.
