So I loaded up Minecraft with the photorealistic texture pack with the highest resolution and highest graphic settings, cake. So I loaded up Fallout NV with a bunch of mods, cranked the graphics settings, and it ran without a glitch.


I was intending to get a PC that could handle pretty much every game I was trying to play. I am almost tempted to sell my PS3.

Sooooo about that new Asus ....





















Started giving me disc read errors on every start up, which seemed to be caused by a faulty HDD or a bad connection maybe due to rocky shipping (UPS). Instead of cracking it open I decided to protect the 1 yr. coverage/2 yr. warranty and just exchange it out for a fresh new one from TigerDirect.

Let me interject that at this point I should have just sent it in to Asus for repair, but something about sending in a brand new PC for repair bothered me.

So it turns out TD does not hold computers for exchanges, so while they had two in stock when I sent my PC in, they had none in stock when it arrived at their warehouse. Since I got it on sale, they pretty much had nothing with comparable parts for the same amount of money.

Thus, I now have one of these set to arrive here on Wednesday:

They had an $80 coupon running for it yesterday, so I snagged it for $899. It was more than I would have like to spend, and the screen is bigger than I usually prefer, but now I have the full 8GB ram

How did tiger direct ship the first one? Did it seem like it was boxed well enough?

The laptop box inside a much-bigger-than-necessary-or-wise box, with that shitty brown paper stuffer as the only buffer. So I imagine it got bounced around a lot. That bouncing could easily knock something out of whack.

Ah, that is some kind of weakass bullshit. The Asus computerboxes are actually pretty hard to fuck up.

I was surprised when i got my laptop direct from the refurbisher. Shit was packed in a large-ass triple-walled box with a precisely fitted four-inch thick foam shock absorby jobber holding everything in place. I guess they didn't want to see any returns or something. I found it impressively over the top at the time. But in retrospect, i think that is probably how they should all ship.

Yeah TD's approach to shipping is pretty fucking awful. In fact, regardless of the shape the laptop arrives, if it comes with that shitty packaging I am going to complain.

Bridgette, the supervisor, is already not a fan of mine.

P.S. I used to be a big fan of TD, but this last transaction has left a very bad taste in my mouth.

I used to buy shitloads from them back in the day.

Over time i moved over to newegg though. Originally, i would buy 90% of my shit from TD for the prices they had, but then get certain stuff from newegg, because they carried the Abit motherboards and vidcards, but TD didn't. But over time, the pricing seemed to equalize between the two, and the newegg orders got to me quicker for whatever reason, so i stopped ordering from tigerdirect entirely. I do check them for prices though. I prefer the way the newegg site works also.

Actually, i just remembered that i actually bought the Asus i did after seeing the refurbs go up on tiger direct. I noted the name of the refurbishing company that TD listed for the warranty, and tracked down their ebay store. I figured, if i was going to go refurb and possibly have to deal with a return i might as well go straight to the source. The refurb place was actually looking for less money also, for the same computer, like $75 less.

But i wouldn't have gotten this computer at all if it was not for tiger direct listing it in the first place.

And if this one has any issues I am going to deal with Asus directly. TD just doesn't give a shit after they have shipped a product, it seems.

Which seems an odd choice if they are also going to pack shit weird, no?

I could see a company being lax with the packaging, gambling on the quickcheap, as long as they are prepared to deal with fucked up shipments/returns. I mean Musicians Friend has been doing it that way for pretty much ever.

But if you are going to roll like that and then give folks guff about returns, that just seems silly.

17.3" screen = massive computer.

Seriously, this thing is sooo much bigger than what I really wanted. Big enough to where the keyboard has a number pad, and still has about an inch of clearance from either side of the case. Shit is crazy.

The aluminum cases is nice, and I am about to load up some games on it to push it a bit. But, since the last one handled everything just fine with 4gb less ram, I figure this one should be fine
