I'm pretty sure I was into SYL at 16, but only Heavy as a Really Heavy Thing and City were out at that point.

I would have thought Love? was cool, but the rest would have gone right over my head.

I actually was listening to gorguts when I was 15 and 16, however, Obscura took me until I was 17 to appreciate fully. SYL was easier for me to digest at 15 and 16.

My music taste was not nearly developed enough in that area to even come close to getting Gorguts at that age. I was far more interested in poppy, catchy songwriting. I would say I had good taste but not too developed or refined.

Had I heard Gorguts at 16 I would've been all about them, I'm sure.

Re: Your favourite album at 16
I didn't like DM at that age. Big-four thrash, hells yes Silent Bob. It took late-'90s European melodeath to get me into death metal.
Other contenders would have been Mellon Collie or Downward Spiral. KMFDM's Nihil got listened to a lot too. The Wall. Doors Strange Days. Metallica Justice; Cure Disintegration; TSOM Floodland- I remember the first time I listened to it.
Oddly save for the metal- grew bored with it- it's stuff I'd still listen to, mostly. I wouldn't say my tastes were fully developed but the base of it was already there, at least the rock portion. Classical music was my first and truest love; I don't count that for here.
