Re: Blog/tweet about shit in your life here
I'm gonna have to try pulling down the faders some time. My waveforms look (and thus sound) horrible I guess because I mainly leave them all at 0 and compress the fuck out of it with that kjaerhus master limiter

Re: Blog/tweet about shit in your life here
I am nuts. 30db of peak headroom is nuts. But consider the noises I poast- I'm whaling the everloving tar outta that shit with compression and in some cases outright distortion, often from doing nasty things like using limiters for overdrive, distorting the mic pre on input, etc. If I turned up, there'd be nothing left! I feel the principle is sound though.
I have and have read the Bob Katz mastering book, I could maybe? at least do a passable job in the digital realm, but I suck- like really suck- at beating the the hell out of mixes. So I've taken to just leaving them. I have a bus compressor I mix into (Cytomic The Glue) and after the fact I'll hit it up with the JJP Waves EQs and hit it in parallel with Flux Stereo Tool; I might take Decapitator to it in parallel with the drive on 0 or 1, or Waves Master Tape. Really I'm just cleaning it up or making it bigger/wider and not compressing much if at all.
And before you say "you dickhead! I read your thread, I know what's on your shit these days! Unfair statements." it's not the gear, it's the treatment. I'm intentionally filthing up these tracks in many cases, if not almost every! You can only "buy in" so much. Drum room is the biggest deal, IMO. by far, source-wise. I like Strict Constructionist, Catholic L/C/R panning for super-separation. (Save for stuff that pans in motion across the stereo field, I only pan hard left/center/hard right. Room mics or overhead pairs add the rest.) Subtractive EQ. Monstrous headroom to start with for gain staging into my compressors and EQs. Nothing to it other than that. Good headphones that pair up well sonically with yer monitors help.
Just me though. My noise is Hi-Fi Lo-Fi. Super-clear mixes of horrid sounds.

Re: Blog/tweet about shit in your life here
You haz a valid point. I have always mixed low. I've heard folks say, it could be louder, but I like dynamics, even in a mix. I do not over compress. I would say I under compress, by a lot. Usually.
You would think that older recordings would have been louder (Beatles, Zep etc..) we used to fight tape hiss, and louder seemed to always help that, yet somehow everything was mixed quieter. Maybe lack of compression.

Re: Blog/tweet about shit in your life here
There's something to be said for not square-waving one's mix. The gain staging of digital vs. analog tape is totally different. With digital- 24 bit especially- you have way more headroom and essentially no noise floor unless you're pushing the preamp or any in-line processing- compressors, etc. (am I the only one who still prints effects? ), and you're certainly not gonna gain anything by driving it into the red! You can push tape. if you want, as an effect- hell, there's tons of emulations of that! And not that there isn't a place for mondo compression- Paul and Ringo, anyone? Bonham? But yer talking individual sources there. It's a totally valid way of making a noise, and a useful one. But 's another topic entirely. To be loud it must first be quiet. That's some like total Zen shit right there.

Dammut, Reaper IS pro. I got this: Primarily to crunchify vocals, but I suppose I'll also saturated close miced drums and other things... It was on sale.

I despise the sound of some languages. Marshallese being one of these, no dynamics to the language, it sounds like they are always arguing. Drives me fucking insane.

I think English lack feeling when spoken but has more when sung. I find Spanish the exact opposite.

Amazing that a coffee purveyor might not understand the desire to consume extra large quantities of the stuff. Unless they were hoping that they could get you for more overpriced espresso-based fluids. Even though most joints make considerably more profit off the standard coffee beanstyle biz.

Re: Blog/tweet about shit in your life here
Yeah that was my thinking. It confounds me to wait in line and listen to people order these weird fruity coffee's with more milk and foam than the good stuff. I order a black coffee and a regular espresso and I am considered the strange one.
