I have been thinking about this, and i still don't know if i would go for some drummer who can actually play in time, or for someone highly skilled on some instrument i want to know how to play, but currently do not possess the remotest ability on.

As i feel like most of what i screw up with the drums could most likely be fixed with more rigorous practice, i am leaning towards the Brand New Instrument angle. I am thinking concert harp or something wind-based, like a saxamophone or flugelhorn or some shit.

I'd love to be able to play the drums to a good enough standard to play in bands.

You already can. Drums are dead fucking simple.

But you know, i don't think it matters. The main thing with drums is just jumping in, and playing with whoever. Within six months of starting and playing with folks, i was ready to play gigs. There are extra hopeless cases WRT sense of rhythm, but you already play guitar, and you have programmed enough drums(that are interesting constructions) that i would guess that a cheap drumset and a sound proofed space, plus someone to jam out with, and you would find it coming together more quickly than you expect.

To get super-proficient takes forever, but to get rock giggable, not so much.

Seriously. I'm an awful drummer but I can play in time-ish and do a few neat things, if not necessarily at once. The kicks are the hardest for me; I can't go too nuts on them (I prefer a double kick setup actually; I often lead with my left when I shouldn't, especially with more complex ride patterns, don't know why.) or I sound even worse. I like to ghost on the snare but I'm no good at it. If I never had to hit a kick drum, I'd probably be damn passable.

Many many years of programming fakedrums to sound like realdrums and thus having to learn realdrums taught me well. Starting off with hardware synths and drum machines in the '90s, to get convincing-ish, you needed dynamics of the sort a good recordist wants to clobber a bad drummer for not having.

In general- I suck at drums because I don't have a kit kicking around for me to play on all the time. But I get the theory behind them, and that's about 200% of it. If you get what you're doing- key words- you can get passable in short order, like Chris said.

My problem is losing concentration and drifting out of time. And I can't really do any kind of fill without the whole thing falling apart As you say Snaxo I think if there were a kit lying around for me to play all the time I'd probably be able to pick it up.
