I sang a total of 5 songs this week...not sure if there's video of any. A-Ha - Take on Me, Judas Priest - You've Got Another Thing Coming, Dio - The Last in Line, Rick Astley - Never Gonna Give You Up, and the Bee Gees - Stayin' Alive. She got there around Last in Line.

Possibly surprising fact: Karaoke will get you laid.

New job is going well. Pretty much already being left to do all the stuff by myself rather than being constantly supervised. Starting shift patterns on Sunday though - 6:30am start Suppose it's worth it for a job I actually enjoy. Also, I bought new jeans today and somehow fit into 32" waist stuff To summarise, life is rather good right now.

That is the best kind of work, and the appropriate one for creative peeps. Just let us do our thing, it will be done and done well. Don't watch us, we can't think when you're doing that and find it vaguely insulting. I'm used to working in holes no one climbs into. You ask when you can get your thing, I tell you approximately when to expect it, then you get your thing, and like it. Shocking too when we really get on with management types- the personalities and desire for structure are so opposite.

The morning thing doth sucketh muchly. I've no desire to ever be up at that hour. To be at work at that hour would be terrible- unless I was still at work being nightperson.

True fact: they do not need all the fucking toms. Four at most, two is fine. A fill across two is totally fine if done right. Hear a guy really, really rock a four-piece and you'll know.

I would like to know what this recipe is. Or at least hear its results. Still just rocking eight channels in? I'll take a wild guess that you're spot-micing groups of stuff? What's your overhead setup like?

After a month and a half of family visits and holidays, my sleeping schedule is almost normal people stylee right now.

Shit is weird. I am sure it will drift right back as it always does, but for now, i have been experiencing the morning. Like, as a time in which people are awake, and do things. WHY?



In other news, i have decided that almost as much as i need a new interface with at least ten inputs, well shit, i think i need four channels of compression. I wish alesis still made those shitcheap microlimiters, because that would basically do the trick.

But essentially, after recording a drummer who knows how to tune his drums, and a singer who has the tendency to step away from the mic for the quiet parts and get closer for the loud ones... i need a device to keep shit a little more sane and stop the Ultimate Violence Peaks. Either that or when setting levels, and i say "okay, now hit the snare as hard as you are going to hit it in any of the songs" or "sing as loudly as the loudest part", motherfuckers need to like, actually do that.

In absolute troof, most drummers don't know what to do with one tom and one floor tom.

That said, i am all for tons of toms if a drummer 1. knows what to do with them, 2. doesn't expect them to be individually mic'ed, and 3. doesn't expect me to help him/her load them in/out.

You can still find the Microlimiters; they pop up on the 'bay occasionally. People have realized they are a secret weapon for destroying the shit out of things though. The really fun compressors are like that.

I think I still have a pair of 3630s in my parents' basement. It's close to the once a year I see my familypersons. They are shitty (the compressors, not my 'rents, who are nice, but so very conventional), but there's that mod for them in an old TapeOp IIRC? I would let those go for, er, not much, and that's four channels. The mod IIRC disables the gate but makes the actual compressor bit not terrible?

I understand your budget is nil, essentially. The channels in thing is relephant. I have a friend with a broken Firepod. He's an EE but he never got around to fixing it as he has lots of channels of other stuff now. I can ask what the deal is if you'd like; I don't remember what's up with it.
