Post Re: Blog/tweet about shit in your life here
Hmm, give me a dollar number for your 3630s and i will see what can be seen. In troof, until now, i haven't considered comp/lim anywhere near necessary for the extremely low fidelity recording services i offer, so i have absolutely no idea what is out there or what things cost.

Using no hardware compression has worked fine for recording just me, because i know to really beat the shit out of the snare when setting levels so it won't overload later, and i know to move away on the louds and closer on the quiets to level vocal volumes at the source. But goodgodamn, recording other people flings wrenches all about the works.

Also, a broken Firepod is intriguing. But unless he wanted to dump it for essentially nothing, probably not the best course for me. For instance i would be more inclined to spend $150 on a broken Tascam US1800 from MF and (if fixable) get 14 inputs out of the deal, than get the eight plus lightpipe eight more capabilities (IIRC) that a Firepod would provide(assuming again, i could enfixellate it). Unless it is not in fact a Firepod but rather one of those Firestudio Tubes, which had properly sixteen inputs IIRC(10 XLR plus 6 line-in, or something) because that, i could certainly work with.

But you are right about my embroken-ness. Sucks because i made a little money recording this last band, but alas, now i have to give it to the electric company. Or the oil people. I haven't decided which yet. Fuck winter time.

Hmmm, I must've fucked things up with karaoke girl somehow. I got a text back after trying to call her using the death-in-the-family excuse for not feeling like talking. (And it was her "great aunt".)

Meh. It probably would've just been a hookup kinda thing, and I'm not really a fan of those.

Going to use the secret recipe for drums (in my basement, with my equipment) that I perfected a week or two ago...

True fact: they do not need all the fucking toms. Four at most, two is fine. A fill across two is totally fine if done right. Hear a guy really, really rock a four-piece and you'll know.

I would like to know what this recipe is. Or at least hear its results. Still just rocking eight channels in? I'll take a wild guess that you're spot-micing groups of stuff? What's your overhead setup like?

Shit, BTW, I have some things to mail you.

Absolutely. I mean a rack and a floor, you've got your essentials. Add another tom, and you've got options. Anything after that and well, it starts to become a bit much. A bit much to transport, to mic, etc. Especially when there's four rack toms.
Well, the drummer took it down from five total to three, yay! Three rack toms and no floor. Wat. And they are skinned with black pinstripes... old ones with tape. That doesn't sound very good at all. :red: I will probably have to replace the tom sounds with SD2.

So suffice to say my 'recipe' didn't work out.

But here it is anyway.

Keep in mind, this is for recording metal, not the 'everything replaced and quantized' kind but there is still a little tomfoolery...

Mostly because the kick is triggered. I use my own Yamaha for my triggering, the 'tite dry' or whatever they call it sample is brilliant. The drummer yesterday, we used his Roland, and the sample we used... not so fond of it, we'll see.

Snare, miced top and bottom. Actually for yesterday's session I probably could have gotten away with just the top, as the dead head on top versus the surprisingly loud wires below led to a lot of under-snare action no matter what. We ended up with a 'wumph' eighties sound, even though we tuned it up. Oh well, that's fine. But yeah at least for when I record myself, just the top really doesn't cut it. Once I get the bottom in there the snare fills out, not just from the definition of the wires but the polarity flip seems to add some low mid fatness that I really dig. My Avantone ADM on top and Audix i5 below seems to be the perfect duo for this... sounds so neat and packaged right off the bat. And I gate that with ReaGate, with some of the dry signal leaking out as if it were an expander. But I couldn't do that combo because of the three rack toms, I had to use the i5 because it sounds closest to the two tom mics I have. So again, my 'recipe' wasn't adhered to as well as I'd have hoped. Oh, and I seem to like a coated single ply like an Ambassador or G1. They have the most 'detail' to their sound... kind of like a single coil pickup versus a humbucker.

Toms... my recipe calls for the Avantone ATOMs on the rack tom(s, if I use two), and then I put the Avantone MONDO on the floor tom. I would have done that if you know, there were a floor tom instead of the three racks. They are bass machines, all of them, so it takes a lot of EQ, but I perfected my tom sound in my last recording. Clear double ply heads FTW.

Overheads, I do a spread pair. I actually didn't perfect my overhead placement until yesterday's session. In the session I'm going to post I didn't like how some of the cymbals were being picked up so for yesterday's session I dropped them a foot (they were in previous ones, right against the ceiling of my somewhat low basement), and wowwww! There is some natural reverb going on, and it actually sounds nice. I guess it has to do with the soundwaves bouncing about a bit longer before they reach the mic, kind of like in that TapeOp article. Well, I hi pass the overheads a whole lot and parallel compress them a whole lot with ReaComp.

That's eight channels total.

So here's my 'recipe', with everything but the overheads perfected (to me)(at least in terms of my equipment and location).

"Pungent Pussy Breath"

That sounds damn good though. I'm not wild about the snare sound but that is purely personal preference, I think it sounds good in the mix. The cymbals sound great though.

Poured beer on a girl last night.

Was super drunk at a bar. Went to give her a cheers type thing for no reason. Forgot how full my beer was. Spilled it all over her. LOL.

The good news: I found a pair of cheap Sony ear buds around the house which means I can now listen to music at the university.

The bad news: They are a pair of cheap Sony ear buds and I have to get used to the sound to be able to determine what sounds good and what doesn't

I think I still have a pair of 3630s in my parents' basement. :idk: It's close to the once a year I see my familypersons. They are shitty (the compressors, not my 'rents, who are nice, but so very conventional), but there's that mod for them in an old TapeOp IIRC? I would let those go for, er, not much, and that's four channels. The mod IIRC disables the gate but makes the actual compressor bit not terrible?

Billy Corgan used 3630s in his rack. :red:

So did I. The gate's okay. Lots of Behringer comp/gates show up in bigass rack rigs. The shitty thing about the mod is that you lose the gate! The compressor section is, well... Well, it's not a nice compressor, I'll put it that way. A lot of electronica peeps love it for slamming drum machines though. They also love driving the channels on '90s Mackie boards. Shit, makes me wish I still had a '90s Mackie board. Some stuff's cool just for making stuff un-nice. I had lotsa late-'90s project studio gear once. :red:

Of course, it's also a guitar rig, with its bizarre frequency response and extremely high distortion. Isn't the whole point to wreck that shit?

On an unrelated note, I've never had to write a "to whom it may concern" letter before. My (Pagan, vegan, etc. picture newageygirlstereotype) ex, she wants to move back home from Tex-ass, her mom is dying of MS (we've known this for years) with her son in tow, her ex-husband's a negligent abusive jerkoff, and of course mother-in-law who ignored negligence and abuse for years wants my ex's son as a possession. (One parent works IT, Mac-based, and supports said child and is a responsible, principled person. One is off getting fucked up, sometimes works construction for their father, has a criminal record including spousal abuse, and occasionally makes good on their legal/moral obligations. I'll leave you to guess which is which.)

God forbid a dirty hippie* raise your grandson you shrewish old bitch.

*Obsessively clean; Mom (I still think of her as that) even more so. Also, got me hooked on BPAL fragrances. My housemate and I are both fans of their loveliness,

I have it on good authority that karaoke girl's great aunt's death thing was legitimate and she called out of work for a couple of days because it upset her so much. And she really was rather into me. But apparently she also thought I was blowing her off because I didn't get back to her when she sent the first text she did (Which was at 5:30 AM the day following meeting her. But I didn't actually receive it until 10:30 that night. My phone sucks like that sometimes)

Horses are pretty fascinating creatures.

Four legged companions we ride on top of and use as extensions of our own body to travel faster and kill people with.

I declare these the new rules for riding a horse:

You need the following:

A) an awesome hat.
B) a sword, lance or pistol(s). Minimum; the more the better.

If your hat kicks ass and you're heavily armed, you can ride a horse. Or equivalent- elephant, raptor, etc.

Now, if you're gonna be all "I carry a battle axe and an anti-tank missile. I ride a mastodon". you can't cheap out on the hat.

I believe we shall call these "Teddy's Rules" For there is no badder motherfucker than Teddy on a horse. In fact, he would get re-elected President if someone would put him on the ballot. Even dead.

If i had a horse, it would be a white horse, and i would make a unicorn horn for it. Then i would race it on the international circuit. There is really no other way.
