A wall of Twins? Considering the fact that Nuge's tone wasn't exactly clean I'll bet that was absolutely deafening. Hell, one Twin cranked to his gain level will do some serious hearing fuckery.

I read the thread our fearless leader posted, and apparently he'd used Super Twins at one point. 6x 6L6 power section. :hypno: EVMs and JBL 15s in the extension cabs. Christalfuckingmighty.

Yes THIS is what Nuge was famous for the Super Twin and the Byrdland. How he could possible tame this I have no idea, other than he never stops moving so feedback would not have a chance to catch up.

My boss/apprentice ship guide played with Nuge and opened for him on 2 tours in the late 70's.

Ted was using Supers and Twins and a Dumble ods combo with Gibson Byrdlands, 335's, and a Les paul.

He also loved Jbl speakers apparently.

Nuge has great tone and control of his guitars, he's been playing forever and his technique adapted to his gear choice.... but yea he lost a shit ton of hearing from those fenders.

I just read a Neil Young comment the other day where he bitched about modern rock having no high end. :hypno: What was that about having lost a shit ton of hearing from a lot of old Fenders? :snax:

No shit. And the high end is the first thing to go. Given the tendency of modern records to be a bit bass-shy to push the volume and oftentimes having grating, hideous distorted high end (and that's disregarding the cymbals in much modern metal, which I'm pretty sure he's not listening to... Those are downright frightening), I'd say Neil's lost a bit maybe a little.

Also, IEMs are super-sexy. Coupled with a good set of 'phones (my band recommends Etymotic e6s) you get hearing protection from the outside and better monitoring no matter where you are onstage. And decent plugs that don't crap all over the top end aren't that expensive- 'cause we all know the foam ones are lame.

And also, take 'em to shows, 'cause there are some dickheads mixing with them in and not checking without so it only sounds like not-shit with them in, and there's guys who have no top end left so they push things to obscene levels of nasty and it only sounds right with them in anyhow 'cause that's about all these dudes can hear.

They're in the back somewhere between the romantic comedies and the non-alcoholic beer.

One of my drummers has no high end, so he send all high end out to the board (electrokute kit) I really disike elect kits. I do like the ear saving plastic cymbals though.

Post Re: Blog/tweet about shit in your life here
I am so grateful my drummer has a light- or, rather, nuanced- touch on the brass.

One drummer I used to play with, in several bands, skinny little waifish goth boi- my ex-fiancé and I both used to hit on him at rehearsal just to fuck with him  - hit like the fist of fucking Thor. I'd seen one of his other bands at a large club (like 600 capacity for the downstairs) and he was loud and clear at the door unmiced. We had no clue how the fuck he did it. (Well, after playing his one [custom] kit, the thing made me sound like I hit like Bonham, and I use 2Bs to make it sound like I don't hit like a girl.) He had a reputation for being just deafeningly, mindblowingly fucking loud. We were rehearsing one night in a tiny little concrete basement and I made the mistake of taking out my earplugs as I was tampering with the mixer, and he just lays into this giant brass snare as hard as he goddamn can and it's like :hypno: might as well have fired a shotgun.

Among things he broke- 16" Zildjian Mastersound hats, and Ahead aluminum sticks. How the fuck do you do that? In a much larger room (a Unitarian Unaversalist church basement/meeting hall our singer rented out; a cavern of epic reverb), my ex was attending rehearsal, sitting on her laptop playing Heroes Of Might And Magic IV, with my Sennheiser HD280s on for, well, mostly hearing protection. He was using wood sticks at the time. He breaks one and it flies a good thirty feet across the very, very large room and hits her right in the face. We were not happy.

Going to Toronto this March for a weekend.

Don't some of you guys live there? I'm gonna be there for my senior project class actually, so I dunno if I'll have time to sneak out of the group and get drunk.

The current issue of TapeOp is fucking awesome, and I'm only halfway in. The Steve Albini interview and the stem mixing article alone are worth the price of admission.

I agree. As i was reading it, it occurred to me that it was of a particularly fine vintage, even for them. :huzzah:
