I suppose it does qualify as such! When I heard it this morning I just figured it to be some kind of gnarly abstract space metal.

These have been getting a lot of play from me lately. The Moon and Antarctica has grown on me a lot since I first heard it.

It's dope hearing them with a drummer who has more options and abilities than the dude they'd had since the beginning. Some really cool songs on this, but it'll be awhile before I know how I like it versus their old stuff.

Not sure why they replaced the fuck out of all these drums, man. A modern reinterpretation of the classic guitar sound is there, the riffs are there, the vocals. But these goddamn drums.. None of the shit is even that crazy, I know they didn't have to replace the samples for the sake of shite drumming. :dukes:

Fun listen though. As usual.

I ship it. :tu:

If you're liking that flavor of noise, Killing Joke, Wire and Bauhaus might be up your alley. From there post-punk starts to branch off into goth and stuff like Jesus And Mary Chain. And if you want to add more punk-noise-violence, Big Black is good stuff.

Yarr, and if you don't have it yet, the first Gang Of Four record (Entertainment!) is pretty awesome(it is my fav of theirs).

Also, snaxo is right on. For my favorites, especially aboot Wire. Get Pink Flag and Chairs Missing at least, from them.

I haven't been able to acquire a copy of Entertainment, though it has Damaged Goods on it so I might have buy it with... REAL ACTUAL MONEY.

Oh, and FWIW, Andy Gill from Gang Of Four produced a pretty sweet Killing Joke record (self-titled) a few years back with Dave Grohl on drums. Killing Joke goes off into something resembling metal territory on a pretty regular basis and are easily the chunkiest sounding thing from that scene. (Which is generally full of great skronky noisy guitar action in general.)

IIRC he's vaguely involved with some Jesus Lizard stuff? Which, since you liked the first Tomahawk record, may be worth czeching out- same guitarist. And that's going off into different territory, another branch of weirdrock's ugly family tree. Also engineered by Steve Albini- who fronted/guitar'd Big Black... So this stuff is all related. :dildo: :eyebrows:

Oh, and re: Bauhaus- their catalog's pretty small. I suppose you could start with the best-of (Crackle) to see if you like/dislike their noise, but it's just as easy to start with In The Flat Field and go in chronological order. The reunion album (Go Away White) from a few years back was pretty lackluster though. They get pegged as "goth" sometimes but they're not, really; I'd say "Bowie-influenced noisy art-punk" or something more along those lines. Not mopey, just odd.

Yeah, Tomahawk is some fucking righteous shit. Mike Patton really is a weird/scary dude..

I am getting that Killing Joke record you mentioned, Songs About Fucking and might as well grab some Jesus Lizard stuff.

Another one that is related, though more on the postpunk end, and less on the skronknoise end, is Magazine:

That is actually one of the doods from Buzzcocks, and as a result the geetars owe more to that style perhaps, but musically, they are very much in the same land as folks like Gang Of Four and Wire and also early Killing Joke.

If you don't already have it, get the earlier self-titled (circa 1980) record as well. Both are solid as fuck, but fairly different flavors of the Killing Joke thing. The earlier record is a little more like the gang of four/wire sort of sounds.
