What kind of games? Like 8-bit side scrollers or tabletop stuff.

Right now I am working on a 2D sidescroller. Got my basic character controller put together last night. Today I try to conquer the camera following script so I can make longer levels and have the camera follow the character but only moving on the x axis, don't need it to move up when the player jumps ... yet, but I might make taller levels where that is required.

Is the program hard to learn? I always wanted to make a silly side scrolling game and use metal songs in 8-bit version for the music.

That depends.

It would take a lot to list and explain everything that I use for what (a combination of standalone software and plugins for the Unity 3d editor), but in general no.

For what you would want to do, you could probably use something like Torque 2D effectively, but the coding can get intensive and it costs money. Also, the code is in a C like language called TorqueScript which as far as I can tell you would not use outside of that environment.

Unity is free, but it is a 3d engine, so you have to build 2d games in a 3d environment which can be a pain in the ass. Though, Orthello 2D is a great (and free) 2D Framework for Unity, and the Pro version which has lots of useful tools is only $35.

Because I fucking suck at coding, I use the Playmaker plugin for Unity which is a visual script editor. It can't do everything (if you want to make a game you are probably going to have to code at some point), but it can do a lot and is great for prototyping ideas. It's also easy to learn.

Unity uses two coding languages, C# and Javascript. Both are pretty damn easy to learn and use, and both are popular for a lot of web, mobile and even gaming purposes. For example, Microsoft built the XNA engine using C#. XNA is the engine used for the XBox arcade games and such.

MineCraft was written in Java.

As far as graphics go, I use ASE Sprite for my basic 8-bit style sprite editing needs. For more complex stuff I use Photoshop, for Voxel stuff I use Qubicle and for 3D stuff I use Blender.





So for what you want to do, especially if you are not looking to release anything so you can just steal lots of code and graphics, no it would not be that hard to learn. But you DO have to learn it, and the curve can get pretty steep so be prepared to spend a lot of time on simple shit that won't work and will frustrate the shit out of you.

Stilll environmental consulting, gettin srs with the womanface and seeing her almsot every day, and getting VERY serious with my computer. I've spent probably 400$ on watercooling equipment that i have yet to install into my computer, i'll defs post pics here. It involves me taking a dremel to my case which is probably the most stressful thing i've ever done hahaha.

Oh and gaming. Playing BF3 a lot with buddies, and doing very well in Tribes: Ascend, getting super ready for Mechwarrior, Hawken, omg all the games. I really lack free time to do anything. I think i game once or twice a week now, its SO SAD.

I really do miss all the people here, i'll try to be more active. Its just good vibes here bros.

ALSO: I am not a vampire from Twilight. I can deal with getting the "vampire" part, but the "Twilight" part is a bit much. I do not sparkle involuntarily.

On an unrelated note, I do believe I'll be metal-bassing again. We're going for a power trio thing so I may be singing/yelling as well. As long as I don't have to write most of the lyrics, because I am the slowest writer ever, I am okay with that as well. Same guitarist/programmer I always work with on that noise. We never get anything done really, but I like doing it anyhow.

Garda starts gigging again this coming Saturn's Day! Much violence will be inflicted upon the populace. Convergence in a couple weeks, too. That'll be interesting. Voltaire is headlining with a solo acoustic performance; we have an hour long set immediately before complete with blinking lights and big shiny rockshow. Hopefully it'll be half-decently attended, as it's the last night and on a Sunday evening. On the plus side, we have all goddamn day to set up.

ugh just found out yesterday that our dog only has 3-6 months left due to a heart condition, and that his death will be sudden and could happen any time :\ He's only just turned 8 which seems too young for a golden retriever, he's had a good life though.

Damn man. Losing a dog is one of the worst things you can go through. I lose my first dog last year from cancer. We had to put her down it was one of the worst days of my life. :/

Yeah we've always had dogs and having to put them down is horrible.
