Eric Judy from Modest Mouse is such a subtley badass bassist. Also, I'm getting pretty good at speaking spanish. Seems I pick up languages quick.

Re: Blog/tweet about shit in your life here
I agree. Lots of good bass work in their catalog. Their songs just wouldn't be Modest Mouse songs without the bass line in them. As for the spanish...

On a related note... Could someone give me a couple of songs that exemplify different bass pickups? Like a song that uses J bass pickups, one for P bass pickups and another for humbuckers?

Knope, mi kiarro multa! Polnermo muy loco! No multa, poreso estoy triste! I realize that that was a little off.. I don't know how to say "have". And the spelling is probably fucked, but I am only a week and a half into learning, and I'm moving quick-ish. The plasterers say I have very good pronunciation for a gringo.

Re: Blog/tweet about shit in your life here
To be honest, i cannot hear pickup differences for bass on recordings very well. I can hear general scale lengths clear as day for the most part, but not pickups. I find it is a little different, actually playing the basses in question though. Humbuckers feel bigger and maybe muddier, single coils feel middier and clearer, that sort of thing. I say "feel", because i generally don't find myself able to discern as much once recorded. But it seems obvious enough when playing. One thing that is worth noting, is that if you have both J-Bass pickups on fullblast, they make a wide humbucker of sorts. If you do just one or just the other, they do stick out more as thinner and reedier. If you put them both on full, it gets a little harder to make them out, if you were to blindly listen compared to the P-Bass. IMO. I have never been super picky about exactly how a bass sounds. I have general preferences and favorite sounds, but it is more about knowing i want to change something in the EQ or dirt, than thinking i want to swap basses out. In my opinion, it is probably best to find the bass that feels best to you to play, and then just make it sound the way you want it. This is, in my view, something that is actually possible with basses, unlike guitars, which are harder to change that way. The low register and greatly reduced mids and treble ranges help a lot in this regard. Admittedly, i am really just more of a bass hack though.

Knope, my (love you?) fine(traffic ticket fine)! Lets get very crazy! No fine, that's why I'm sad! what exactly were you trying to say? In you knowledge gaining, if you need any help just ask. I've been thinking of starting to learn portuguese. Re: Chris I just saw a youtube video where it illustrated exactly what you said. With changes in the tone knobs and the attack, they all can sound just about the same. That bass Devin has in his spam doesn't sound like it should be too horrible. I wonder if he still has it I'd have to sell the GE-7 first to pay for the shipping though.

Re: Blog/tweet about shit in your life here
Devin's bass is pretty much exactly what i would buy if i had bassmoney, actually. I always meant to buy one of the SX P+J basses to go with my cheapo SX jazzbass, but then they went and fucked up the headstocks. Dev's is an older one, thus making it basically ideal.

Re: Blog/tweet about shit in your life here
Re: basses, it can be difficult in a recording 'cause it's the mids and top end that give them away, and you can't always hear that well, if at all in the context of a mix. Not clearly enough, at least. Now, the bigass exposed-coil humbucker in a Musicman Stingray has a very distinctive top end, the oddball active pickups in a Warwick have a fairly unique growly thing going on, the bridge pickup in a J-bass is quite recognizable on its own, whereas the neck pickup can sound similar to a P. Rickenbacker sounds closest to a J to me (specifically, said bridge pickup). As far as recordings are concerned though, that's actually a difficult one off the top of my head as I'd have to know not only what was being used, but it would have to be pretty high in the mix and fairly clean/un-fucked-with, which is not necessarily the case with a lot of iconic bass tones. (Example A: Steve Harris. 'Cause no one else's P-bass sounds like that.) | | | | chris_d wrote: One thing that is worth noting, is that if you have both J-Bass pickups on fullblast, they make a wide humbucker of sorts. Also, these. You can, to a degree, EQ your way there, especially in the context of a mix. See: the whole mids/top thing. Things that might be glaring solo-ed, aren't, so much, with everything else going.

Hahaha, I thought multa was marijuana? I meant to say "Knope, I want marijuana! I want to get crazy. I have no marijuana, that's why I am sad." But I learned "have" is tiennes, which was a word I've used, just did not know it's meaning. I say "Quanta mescla tiennes?" a million times a day.

Re: Blog/tweet about shit in your life here
In PR its just "pasto" which is directly translated from "weed". I'm not too familiar with slang outside of PR though so "multa" could be that somewhere else. Funny enough marijuana is just marijuana.
Knope, quiero pasto! Quiero ponerme loco! No tengo marijuana, y por eso estoy triste.
Quanta = Cuanta, mescla = mezcla, tiennes = tienes. "Q"+"u" = silent "u"

Re: Blog/tweet about shit in your life here
My sister/housemate recently learned that the reason she frequently feels unwell, is that she is kind of um, allergic to, well, almost all foods? Anyhow, in light of this, and because it was my birthday, it came to pass, that we decided to construct an experimental birthday cake out of foods that she can eat. Now, because of the sheer mass of foods she can't eat, this didn't leave much in the "available to cake with" column. The resulting experimental cake thing that Science provided, has the most... interesting texture to it. I actually find it quite decent. Though admittedly, like, slightly more than 100% entirely not really cake-like.

Re: Blog/tweet about shit in your life here
You know, i am not entirely certain. In the end, she found some information/recipes that she utilized. I do know that it has no wheat, eggs, dairy, soy, peanuts, yeast, pineapple, walnuts, sweet potato, or like almost anything else made out of food.
I suspect that rice flour may have been involved, and also, i believe, xanthan gum. The latter by the way, is one of the odder substances that science has provided the culinary field, like, uh, ever. It is indeed this substance i believe, that lends the ersatzcake its... almost cartoonish, springy nature. Cutting the cakething was crazy, it was like like flubber.
Science!

Re: Blog/tweet about shit in your life here
Early October, I forget the exact dates, going back to ze big studio fer a Garda full-length.
Geekshit: the owner of said studio (Goo Goo Dolls' bassist) showed up at our show tonight. We talked gear for a good while beforehand. I didn't know they still had a 2" machine, he said no one ever asks about it. I asked about it last time! Well, I asked one of the engineers, at any rate, who didn't know they still had the thing. And I, er, sort of requested it for the upcoming whatnots. The exchange was quite funny (if one knew what we were on about). I do really like the guy; so not a rockstar d-bag. Dude's in a local dive bar putting up photocopied 8.5x11 flyers for some local indie whatnot- dude is one of the good guys.
