I often forget how much i usedto/kindofstilldo love Candiria. I really enjoy their chug style wif crazedrums. I am a big fan of guitars that just loop and rhythm biz up, opening up the drums ability to wander off into the wilderness some. At least when done in whatever specific way it is that i get along with. I mean, that is kind of what Meshuggah does too, but i could never get as into that band as i did this one.

Also, I did just realize that's downtown Buffalo in the cover photo. (Back cover, too.) I'm trying to place where but I have a few guesses.

Have not listened to this in fucking stacks and heaps of years.

Production is odd as hell, or rather, dated as hell, particularly the drumsounds. Kind of awful. But it does give the thing a fairly unique flavor.

Oh, the guitar and bass sounds suck, too. At least this sort of bad production isn't supersmashed distorted ear-rape, though?

The music, though, is a lot cooler than most other hardrockstuff of that era. Maybe because they're on about being angry with the world vs. hookers and blow? Also, they have Tha Funk.

As an aside, are we due for a return to good drumsounds? '70s had some good drumsounds, '90s had a lot of good drumsounds, '80s and '00s had some unnecessary things done to drums.

I would say that half of the 70s had good drums. In my view that is really where this horror fucking-with mode sort of began in earnest, all those overdead/overbig disco drum treatments, the making-unnatural of a inherently natural(it doesn't get more natural than things hitting things) sounding thing. This led directly into the overgate/oververb eighties, and the overlarge/overEQ nineties sounds, which led directly into the comically amplified versions of all three horrors in the 2000s.

Really, to my view, the nineties were a funny mix of proper and improper methods. Kind of depended on who was footing the bill sometimes, and who was making the sounds other times.

In the modern era, there are points for optimism, and for pessimism.

On the optimistic side, with so many bands choosing a less-than-major-label sort of studio environment to record in, it would seem much more likely that we would start to actually hear real sounds in real spaces again, if only due to a technological knowledge limitation, and the powerfully enforced budget constraint of not having "free" money flung at the process by a major label.

On the negative side, it seems a little bit more, that the case has actually been more along the lines of all these amateur recordists, more or less actually aiming for the horrorsounds. And so, even without the budgets and technical knowledge, it seems that people are still getting those sounds, they just found easydumb cheapo ways to do it. Software has never been easier. Sampling has never been easier or more widespread and "acceptable".

So it is interesting, and i don't really know what it will all shake out as, long term.

My brain/gut seems to think that there has to be a blowback, and a return to realitysounds. When i am feeling optimistic, i can hear some evidence already of this. When i am feeling pessimistic, i hear everyfuckingbody editing the shit out of everyfuckingthing, everyfuckingwhere i hear anyfuckingthing.
