I think the Talman is 11's on a "24.75, and the JM would be 9/10's on a "25.5

The JM works in D standard, but it can get a bit sloppy. I think it has 9's on it, in fact I'd be willing to gamble on it.

I am working on Slaughter of the Soul right now, and I definitely am picking up on how catchily it is written. Sneaky metal kids with your secret pop desires. :cop:

Post Re: Teach me your metal ways
As far as metal is concerned, i never got any more technical than the first three Metallica records and Rust In Peace. A small pile of Slayer songs. Oh, maybe a couple of Overkill and Annihilator songs, a little Carcass. I once also knew how to play all of the black album, but i don't consider that to be metal at all anyhow. I once knew how to play most of Ulver's Nattens Madrigal, but that is more like hack classical crossed with a speedpicking endurance excercise than 'proper' metal.

Aside from that, i mostly stopped playing metal metal and shifted to faster sloppier styles pretty early. I continued to play chugmetal for a few years but there is no art or skill to that. And i didn't use anything to write in that style other than the simple endurance that i got from early metallica stuff. The rest i got from listening a lot without learning how to play: Converge, Coalesce, Napalm Death, Gorguts, Cryptopsy, Shellac, Jesus Lizard. I wasn't interested in making obvious "metal" at that point though(and at that point metalcore as a behemoth or a genre, didn't even really exist yet, except to describe very different flavor of bands like Integrity or Biohazard. So what i was doing at the time, it may be difficult to believe today, but then, seemed very interesting and... new.).

Normally i would say just learn what you like to listen to. But in this case i suspect that it is more of a need- than a want- based exploration, so i would say just start with the roots with the early Metallica. And maybe look into learning a couple of the "hits" by Unearth and Killswitch Engage just so see how they fit together. That in conjunction with some mellodeath like At the Gates and something thrashy like Reign In Blood or Rust In Peace, will basically be a solid crash course in what metal is today. Minus the silly extreme end of it of like Origin or something where it basically becomes kind of more just lots of sweep-picked time trials exercises in many cases. Because that shit sucks.

Oh, and fucking Pantera. Learn some Pantera. Something from Vulgar Display or Far Beyond Driven should do the trick. Chug riffage, weedly guitars, etc.

11s on the Talman should be decent. 'S not like the redonkulous Zakk Wylde set with a 70 for the low string or anything, but do-able, if a bit slack.

Inorite? I remember when In Flames' Colony came out writing a review of it for an English course where we had to, well, write a review of something current. Even at the time it surprised me the Swedes would be writing pop-death metal while things like Slipknot and Mudvayne were achieving mainstream success in The States- those were some pretty ugly and comparatively rather inaccessible sounding bands vs. things with perky melodies and catchy choruses- all sans clean vocals!

That is pretty much as much metal as you can stuff into a metal thing. And I'm not even a fan. (Never did it for me/fanbois.) But mad respect nonetheless for, well, being distilled sextuple-filtered essence of metal. And a really excellent rhythm section. See prior statement about RATM whiteboys having no right to groove like that? Same deal, but playing even whiter music. Badasses,

I'd say my picking technique is probably my weakest point.

I also just tuned my Jazzmaster down to D standard and remembered I hadn't changed the strings from the stock 9's or 10's. Like playing spaghetti ...

So whenever I can make my way over to the ol' shop to buy some 11's, I'm gonna start teh chugga-chugga.

For D I always liked 10-52s. I do like it a bit loose on the high strings, but they have a bit of needed tension for the low juggajuggas.

Also, the solo to Cold by ATG is basically the only metal guitar solo that matters (IMO) so maybe try to learn to play that shredly beast.

So I wrote some chugga chugga riffs after running through a few of the things that have been posted. So far, this is what I am starting to gather I should do for my rhythm bits.

Am I on the right track?

Also, thats the JM in D standard :bangin: All software amps and pedals though, it sounds much more hipster-brootz with a Timmy-boost Mastotron running into a AC15 set for barely-dirty.

I switched between straight downpicking and alternate picking a lot. Like in the first riff, I mostly downpick the first bit, then switch to more alternate picking in the second bit.

Edit: Actually, after paying attention to how I was playing it I realized I mostly alternate pick. I usually just downpick the first few notes then switch into alternating. I think it is my method of setting the tempo for my right hand.

What fakemaps? Certainly has a singlecoil metal sound to it. That sort of SPROING thing.

Partswise, you definitely have the right angle for modern melodic sorts of metal, i'd say. :isay:

I would agree with this. Throw in a humbuckering SC and chug chug chug.... woof.

Pretty good. You are taking to it quickly. Dig the single coil spanky tone.
